On Monday we shared a post outlining some of the major milestones for Less Than + Ceremony over the past 6 years. Today we have one more milestone to add to the list.⁣

Today we received and passed our pre-opening inspection to be licensed as a bar and restaurant.⁣

With this approval, our next steps are mostly paperwork and licensing, after which we will officially be able to roll out food from the kitchen and drinks prepared behind the bar.⁣

Our goal is to begin soft launching dinner service Thursday through Saturday with chef-driven, veggie-forward seasonal small plates alongside our craft non-alcoholic cocktails, beer, and wine available by the glass or bottle.⁣

We also plan to offer chef-made pastry goodies as part of our all day program while they last.⁣

From there, if the community wants it, we hope to continue growing our hours and offerings over time.⁣

If there’s a non-alcoholic brand you’d love to see on our menu that we don’t currently carry, tag them below or send them our way. As a reminder, Ceremony does not curate or offer non-alcoholic options containing intoxicating ingredients.⁣

Yesterday we had the pleasure of hosting a retirement party for a local work team. Chef Jack catered for 35 guests while we prepared a couple of signature drinks for everyone to enjoy throughout the evening. ⁣

Whether you’re stopping in for a quiet book club with a glass of wine, planning a birthday, hosting a team gathering, or looking for something a little more involved, we’re here to accommodate events both big and small.⁣

We can comfortably accommodate up to 15 seated guests with a minimum of 1 drink per person per hour to use the space, which we feel is more than reasonable.⁣

Stay tuned as we continue working with Chef Jack on quick bite offerings for guests wanting food options at their events as well.⁣

Live your life out loud. ⁣

Earlier this week we ran to the grocery store to grab a few things for our Curious Elixirs party and noticed the floral section overflowing with unsold Mother’s Day bouquets on clearance. We grabbed one thinking we’d divide them up into little table arrangements for the event… and then in true small business fashion, completely forgot to bring them 😞 ⁣

Some sweet friends brought flowers from their garden for the shop recently and while we absolutely love fresh flowers on the tables, tiny vase arrangements only last so long. So now we’re experimenting with drying flowers to display without water 🌺 ⁣

We started by separating the bouquets and trimming the stems slightly longer than our vase height so we can fine tune them later. Then we removed extra leaves, damp spots, and anything that might hold moisture before arranging them on a wire basket tray in the oven using the dehydration setting.⁣

Most recommendations online suggested around 95°, but after a few hours we bumped ours to 100° which finally got the process moving. Every oven is a little different, so the goal is really just the lowest amount of heat possible. Too much heat can brown the leaves and start “cooking” the petals instead of drying them 🌡️

If you want to do it old school, you can also tie the stems with twine and hang them upside down in a dry, dark place until they fully dry out. Hanging them upside down helps gravity keep their shape a little more elegant while they cure.⁣

We’ll report back with the results… good or bad 🤞🏽 ⁣

Tonight’s the night 🥳⁣

We’re excited to welcome everyone who RSVP’d for Ceremony X Curious Elixirs’ Great Curious Cocktail Party.⁣

Here’s how the evening works:⁣

When you arrive, head to the bar to check in and grab your tasting glass and punch card. Throughout the night, you’ll move through 6 Curious Elixirs expressions with 2oz pours of each while supplies last. Your punch card has room for notes as you go so you can discover your favorite.⁣

For this year’s party, we selected Curious No. 1–4 along with No. 7 and No. 9, each chosen for its unique flavor profile, ingredients, and functional components. We tasted through every option ahead of time and built a Curious Personality challenge around them. As you explore the lineup, you’ll be able to match your favorite drink to a personality card and see what your drink says about you. Just let us know which number ends up being your favorite.⁣

Between tastings, all additional canned beverages throughout the shop will also be available for purchase.⁣

Along the way, enjoy light hors d’oeuvre, live jazz vocals from Ashely Branton, conversation, and a space designed for people who want to participate, connect, and celebrate.⁣

Tables and chairs are communal and first come first serve. We’ve also added bench seating for guests who may prefer a little extra room or flexibility.⁣

Making some small repairs and restorations to a few of the chairs in our lounge. ⁣

The aesthetic behind Ceremony is our interpretation of Art Deco. Less of the rigid, repetitive geometry and more of the jewel tones, contrast, texture, warm metallics, and atmosphere that made the era feel glamorous and immersive. ⁣

A lot of that comes from mixing old and new. Art Deco spanned roughly the 1910s through the 1950s, and while we borrow from its core principles, we reinterpret them through more modern design influences. One example being our Eames fiberglass shell chair introduced in 1950. Instead of ornate decoration, Charles and Ray Eames focused on fluid form and functional beauty through a single molded silhouette. ⁣

Our shell chairs are vintage pieces that have lived a full life before arriving here. These particular chairs originally came in a yellow finish and had holes drilled through the seats to drain rainwater after years sitting outdoors on a farm patio. We acquired them, restored the fiberglass, and paired them with Eiffel-style bases to reintroduce a geometric architectural element that connects them back to the language of Art Deco. ⁣

The color was another intentional choice. While the chairs naturally leaned toward the classic Eames robin’s egg blue, we wanted something richer and more jewel toned. We instead color matched Tiffany & Co.’s iconic Tiffany Blue which pushes the color slightly deeper into an emerald direction under the lighting of the lounge. ⁣

The end result is what we want Ceremony to feel like. Vintage silhouettes, textured, geometric structure, layered color, and intentional contrast between modernism and nostalgia. ⁣

If this is the level of thought that goes into restoring a chair, imagine the intention behind our bar and kitchen program. ⁣Coming soon.

We built something fun for our party with Curious Elixirs and it starts with a simple question: What does your drink say about you? 🥳 ⁣

We started by tasting through each option and breaking down the ingredients and flavor profiles. Then we looked at the functional components and how they’re meant to make you feel. From there we connected the dots and mapped out a personality for each one based on the flavors, the function, and the kind of person who might naturally gravitate toward it. 🥰

When you come in you’ll get a punchcard with every drink listed and a spot to take notes. As you taste your way through jot down what stands out so you can lock in your favorite. At the end grab the personality card that matches your pick and check out the section that says what my drink says about me. Tell us if we nailed it! ✅ or ❌

Sobriety and moderation is about taking ownership of how you live and how you drink. It’s about showing up, participating, and living out loud, not just scrolling, wishing and wondering. Instead of trying to reshape spaces that were never built for you come find one that already is.⁣

Tourism is picking up in Hampton Roads and we’re seeing new folks stopping in for canned beverages to bring to the beach. Glass isn’t permitted, so cans make it easy to sit and sip in the sun.⁣

For those visiting from out of town, here’s something important to keep in mind to help keep everyone safe.⁣

Pictured above is a rip current.⁣

They can be easy to miss if you don’t know what to look for. Often, a rip current looks like the calmest, flattest spot in the water with fewer waves breaking. It might seem like the safest place to enter, but it’s actually water moving quickly back out to sea.⁣

Do not enter the water in these areas.⁣

If you do get caught in a rip current, you’ll feel yourself being pulled away from shore and it can be difficult to swim against it. Stay calm. Don’t fight it by swimming straight back to shore.⁣

Instead, swim parallel to the beach until you’re out of the current, then make your way back in. If you can’t escape, float, conserve energy, and signal for help.⁣ Remember, don’t swim back to shore in the current, swim left or right out of the current and then back to the shore.

Share this with your fellow beach goers so we can all enjoy a safe, booze free summer by the water.⁣
