Behind the Build: The Walls Tell the Story

Then → Now.

In 1982, this corner of Downtown Norfolk looked a little different. The Selden Arcade had become a small shopping center, and this historic mural was part of the streetscape, capturing the people, businesses, and energy of Norfolk at the time.

More than 40 years later, the walls are still telling stories.

Today, we’re adding a new chapter.

We recently welcomed local artist WORLD OF SHAPES into Selden Market to bring a fresh mural to life inside our space. His work adds a little more color, character, and love to a building with a whole lot of history.

1982 → 2026. Different era. Different wall. Same idea: this place is meant to tell stories.

This is Behind the Build, looking back at where Selden came from while celebrating where we’re headed.

If you know Brandon Brinkley, you know he’s a lover of all things Norfolk, and Norfolk Candle is his way of sharing that love with the community.

What started with beautifully poured candles in the coolest, most unexpected vessels has grown into one of the most fun home décor shops in Virginia. And the community has definitely taken notice! Norfolk Candle was recently recognized in the Coastal Virginia Magazine Readers’ Choice Awards, taking Gold for Best Home Décor Store, Silver for Best Locally Made Product, and Bronze for Best Interior Design Store.

And the best part? You never know what you’re going to find.

Brandon is constantly bringing in something new, from beautiful artwork and unique home décor to the little knick knacks and one of a kind finds that make you stop and say, “Okay, I need this.”

He’s passionate about highlighting what’s happening all around us and supporting talented creators along the way. Every visit feels a little like a treasure hunt, with something new around every corner.

Come see what Brandon and his team have been collecting lately and discover why Norfolk Candle is so much more than candles.

📍 Find Norfolk Candle inside Selden Market and shop small, local, and always a little unexpected.

Behind the Build: Downtown Norfolk, Then & Now

Norfolk and water have always had a complicated relationship.

This historic photo gives us a glimpse of Plume Street in Downtown Norfolk after a major flood, with cars making their way through water-covered streets and the businesses of downtown still standing tall around them.

Fast forward to today, and after seeing water once again take over nearby downtown streets, this photo feels especially familiar.

While the streetscape has changed, the story of Downtown Norfolk hasn’t: the city adapts, rebuilds, and keeps moving forward.

And right in the middle of it all is Selden.

Before it became Selden Market, this building was the Academy of Music, then Selden Arcade, and later a hub for businesses and offices. Nearly a century later, it continues to be a place where businesses launch, people gather, and the community comes together.

Different streets. Different cars. Different chapter. Same resilient city.

A special thank you to Josh Weinstein of Norfolk Tour Company for his continued research, behind-the-scenes history, and incredible passion for telling Norfolk’s story. We’re so grateful to have his expertise helping us uncover the stories behind the build!

Behind the Build: The Birth of Selden Arcade

On April 28, 1931, the Selden Arcade officially opened its doors.

Named after Norfolk’s prominent Selden family, the building was modeled after the successful Monticello Arcade across the street, with retail on the first floor and offices above.

But Selden Arcade was more than a shopping destination. Its open design connected Main and Plume Streets, allowing people to walk straight through the building. And apparently, even cars could make the trip. There’s a story of a Model A Ford being driven straight through the arcade on a dare!

The building also became known as “Little Wall Street” because so many investment firms and financial businesses called it home.

And here’s the coolest part: remnants of the original Academy of Music stage are still beneath the floors today. A little piece of the building’s first chapter is still right here with us.

From theater, to arcade, to business hub, to Selden Market the space has continued to change while keeping pieces of its past.
