MEMORIAL DAY
Memorial Day—which occurs on the last Monday in May in remembrance of those who died while serving in the armed forces—is a holiday steeped in somber American history. Originating after the American Civil War as “Decoration Day,” when the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers were decorated with flowers in both the North and South, by the 20th century Memorial Day had been unified to honor all Americans who died while serving in the military.

NATIONAL BROTHER'S DAY
When you were growing up, you may have envied only children. They never had to share their dessert, were exempted from sibling rivalry and didn’t live in constant fear of we**ies. Today, cast aside that envy and feel sad for those onlies who don’t get to celebrate National Brother’s Day on May 24. When you were younger, you argued over LEGOs, whose turn it was to sit in the front seat or who would get the last brownie. Yet, in some strange way, those childhood squabbles made you closer over the years. As a grownup, you know that having a brother confers several advantages: a whole lifetime’s worth of jokes and memories, the camaraderie that comes from having endured the same sadistic algebra teacher, and that warm, fuzzy feeling you get at family reunions (OK, maybe that is the we**ie or a poorly executed arm burn?).

WHAT IS COFFEE?
Coffee is a brewed drink prepared from roasted coffee beans, which are the seeds of berries from the Coffea plant. The genus Coffea is native to tropical Africa (specifically having its origin in Ethiopia and Sudan) and Madagascar, Comoros, Mauritius, and Réunion in the Indian Ocean. The plant was exported from Africa to countries around the world. Coffee plants are now cultivated in over 70 countries, primarily in the equatorial regions of the Americas, Southeast Asia, India, and Africa. The two most commonly grown are arabica and robusta. Once ripe, coffee berries are picked, processed, and dried. Dried coffee seeds (beans) are roasted to varying degrees, depending on the desired flavor. Roasted beans are ground and brewed with near-boiling water to produce coffee as a beverage.

MOTHERS DAY
In 1961, the Peace Corps adopted the slogan “The toughest job you’ll ever love.” No offense, Peace Corps, but that adage is more appropriate for motherhood — an ever-changing job and frequently exasperating. Moms don’t get days off, nor do they receive handsome salaries or generous pensions. Instead, their rewards come in sticky kisses, necklaces made of elbow macaroni, and the satisfaction of seeing their children grow up to be happy, healthy adults. That might not be adequate compensation—so give her an extra hug or twelve on Mother’s Day just in case. Celebrate it with us!

INTERNATIONAL NO DIET DAY
British consultant Mary Evans Young battled anorexia nervosa, body image issues, and bullying for years. After seeing other women suffer the same self-loathing, in May 1992, she decided to stop it. Mary had no idea she had just sparked a global movement by inviting her friends to wear “Ditch That Diet” stickers and to embrace their bodies for a day fully. On May 6, we put away our bathroom scales and get out our light blue ribbons (the official symbol for this day) because it’s International No Diet Day.

NATIONAL TEACHER'S DAY
Anybody who's anybody probably has a great teacher (or three) to thank for inspiring them. Teachers are an integral part of any society, but only in the greatest of societies are they given the respect and admiration they deserve. Teachers work hard every day, tending to the needs of the children in their care and working with them to help them learn. They need patience, a positive attitude, and a lot of imagination to keep kids engaged and teach them the concepts they'll need to continue and be successful. So let's show our teachers how much they mean to us! How are you going to show your teachers they're appreciated? A fully automatic espresso machine in the teachers' lounge can give them the energy they need to be the best teachers they can be all day and every day.

ARBOR DAY
The earliest American Arbor Day took place toward the start of the 1870s — right around the time when Yellowstone, our nation’s first national park, was designated — and in the decades following, many nations around the world followed suit. Today, National Arbor Day is celebrated in dozens of nations worldwide, which serves as a testament to humanity’s endearment toward nature.
