This is Roadrunner. My one and only Red-shouldered Yokohama. I had intentions to get a trio or a small breeding group together but it wasn’t in the cards, as she is the only one from my original 6 that survived. Sometimes those super rare breeds are extra delicate due to limited gene pools. Maybe someday, they’re super neat little birds.

So much for that nesting pad. Apparently Yang requires a cave to lay her egg.

Marge tends to molt… dramatically. It puts her in a really bad mood and she makes the whole ordeal everyone’s problem. Thanks for not dropping every last one of your feathers in January this time around Marge.

On today’s edition of cool veggies: Double Red Sweet Corn. Beautiful, rich in anthocyan and oh so sweet. I purchased these seeds from Hudson Valley Seed Co. another one of my favorite seed suppliers.

I know most of you would rather see a pretty egg, but you’re going to have to be satisfied with this beautiful tomato 🍅 the tomatoes are popping off, the chickens are molting (and not laying).

This is a tie dye tomato from Bhoomi Devi Seeds. I’m obsessed with this deliciously sweet, prolific, regionally-adapted tomato variety. I’ve been really happy with everything I grew from Bhoomi Devi, if you’re in the northeast, definitely add them to your list of seed suppliers to check out!

If this page is quiet lately it’s because it’s harvest season. That means my time is filled with picking, butchering, freezing, pickling and canning.

I invested in a Nesco smart canner at the beginning of the summer. It has quickly become one of my most used appliances. While it certainly isn’t a set it and forget it thing, it’s far better than waiting for the water bath to heat up on the stove or babysitting a jiggler for hours on end. I’ve done jams, pickles, meat and vegetables and haven’t had a jar fail to seal yet.

I’ve been loving the canned meat. I have to admit, it looks terrible visually. Shelf stable meat also feels a little wrong at first. If you can get past the looks, the flavor is great and the convenience of not needing to remember to defrost meat every night is well worth it.

The rest of the broilers go to the freezer tomorrow, and I’m feeling a bit sad to see them go. The Pioneer broilers really exceeded my expectations. They’re funny birds that love to dig holes, find a good bush to hide under and come over to check you out. They grew quick, but their bones, hearts and lungs kept up with them and they could just keep on going if I let them. That was kind of the point, but I don’t have the “ticking time-bomb” feeling I’d get with the Cornish. I can confidently say, these birds lived great lives. They have no reason to suspect tomorrow will be any different, I’ll keep it that way till the last moment.

I definitely recommend trying these. I’ve never been in love with the rangers, but the meat texture on the Cornish was always very “meh”. These hit the mark for us, we will be doing them again in 2027. I always bulk order chicks and have extras.
