My last planned hatch of the season, some Delaware to fulfill an order.

Good chance I’ll fire the incubator back up again before the end of the season to get a few more Delaware for myself. This last batch of Delaware had a fertility rate of 50% so clearly it’s Ghost’s last season. Might try and separate him out with two or three of my favorite hens and focus on getting some babies out of them before he gets fully retired at the end of the summer.

You will like your waterfowl more if you stop trying to raise them like chickens. Seriously though, they are completely different birds. It’s like trying to keep a dog like you would a cat; would you expect your golden retriever to use a litter box? No, that’s unrealistic and everyone is unhappy with the outcomes.

I only keep my waterfowl on heat for about a week and then they’re off it. If the weather is chilly I’ll offer them a heat plate but 90% of the time they’re out from under it. The ancestors of chickens were roaming tropical jungle climates, ducks and geese are breeding as far up as the arctic and introducing their babies to icy waters after only a few days.

Rotating pastures are elite for raising waterfowl. No more soupy runs, no need to lay substrate in an attempt to manage the excess water. Things getting a little nasty? Move them. But what about dragging a duck house around? Getting my ducks and geese to go in a coop at night was always a losing battle, they wanted to sleep under the stars so I let them. Electric fencing keeps them safe from ground predators, simple hides keep them mostly safe from aerial predators.
