MONTHLY STAFF SPOTLIGHT!!!

This month's staff spotlight is our IT Director and Treasurer, Pat Brinkley! Pat works diligently behind the scenes at Vaughn Deer Farm ensuring all our websites, social media, and@ communications, run efficiently, while also managing the finances of Vaughn Deer Farm.

Pat's favorite animal is cats, he has two very lovable cats at home. One is a big yellow fluff ball named Cheese Biscuit, that absolutely loves belly rubs. Meanwhile Vikki will cut you if you touch her belly.

Pat is passionate about many things but his true passion, since he was a child, is classic cars. If your lucky you might catch a glimpse of him driving one of his many "treasures" around Southern Illinois, or maybe find him inquiring about a market listing on Marketplace.

This month Pat Has been Awarded the Trailer Park King Award for having the most yard ornaments or in other words nonfunctioning vehicles in his front yard.

We need to talk about Queenie.
346 days. That's how long she's been waiting. đź’”

When Queenie first came back to us last summer, she'd light up every time someone walked by her kennel. Up on her feet, tail going, so excited at even the chance of getting out. Now when you walk by, she stays on her bed. She doesn't even lift her head. The dog who used to jump up for every single visitor now waits quietly while the world walks past.

Her joy isn't gone. It's just waiting for someone worth getting up for.

Because the people walking by never get to know her. They don't know this 5-year-old pittie mix is housebroken and knows sit, stay, and shake. They don't know she actually loves bath time (yes, really). They don't know she survived parvo as a puppy because this community refused to give up on her. They don't know she's terrified of spray cheese, which is honestly the funniest thing about her.

But here's the thing about Queenie. She's not the dog who loves everyone in the room. She's the dog who loves YOU.

Queenie isn't looking for everyone. She's looking for her person. A quiet, grownups-only home where she gets to be the star of the show, with someone patient enough to let her settle in and discover that slow-burn loyalty is something pretty special. She'd love nothing more than to be your one and only. Cats are a pass for this girl, and if you have a resident dog, we'll set up a meet and greet to see if they hit it off.

If you can't adopt, share this. Somewhere out there is a calm home with a soft spot on the couch and someone who's been waiting for a dog exactly like her.

Queenie, we haven't given up on you. Not for one single day. đź’”

****STAFF SPOTLIGHT ******

For July’s spotlight, we focus on our PR representative, Nathan Mugge. As you all know Nate does a great job with public relations. He is also our resident reptile specialist. If you have been to our sanctuary, you may have seen his presentation as well as some of his reptiles.

What you may not know about him is he holds the award of most cars totaled in one year. Earning him the crash award for Vaughn Deer Farm and Wildlife Sanctuary!!

Enrichment is a vital part of keeping our animals properly stimulated. In captivity our animals do not have to hunt for their food or evade predators. Proper enrichment helps fight boredom, stress, and gives the animals a sense of control in their environment.

For enrichment this week we let our predators "hunt" goldfish in their swimming pools. Here is a video of our male bobcat Osiris trying to catch fish. He managed to catch all four and they made a tasty snack for him.

Porky is finding his way to beat this heat! What's your favorite way to cool off in the summer?

Porky is Vietnamese Pot Bellied Pig. He is one of three pot bellied pigs kept here at Vaughn Deer Farm.
Pot bellied pigs are sometimes marketed as teacup pigs leading people to believe they stay an easily manageable size. While they are a dwarf swine they do reach sizes in excess of 200 pounds.

They also are extremely intelligent and easily trainable, however this also means that they need a lot of mental stimulation and like dogs can become destructive if not properly stimulated.

Also because pigs are considered farm animals they are subject to zoning laws making them illegal to keep in most towns and cities.

Due to their large size, complex behavioral needs, and legality issues Vietnamese Pot Bellied Pigs are frequently surrendered pets. However, if you would like to meet Porky and his two brothers Chuck, and Herby you can come see them here Saturday 10 am -5 pm and Sunday 12pm - 5 pm
