We got first cutting hay made and stored. It wasn’t the best yield, due to the legumes (alfalfa, clover) not growing well because of the cool spring we had. We did have a bad breakdown of the haybine and had to finish up mowing the fields with our little green chopper that only has a 4-foot cutting width. But we got it done and made 120 bales, and the animals will enjoy the hay through the winter months!
Our 986 International Harvester has been getting lots of use this first cutting, from mowing to baling, it’s been a reliable tractor. Hopefully we’ll have another tractor or two running before second cutting.
On top of spending hours in tractors making hay, Rita gets the cows milked everyday and has been crafting cheese in her cheese vat, making upwards of 60 pounds at a time!
