I forgot to post this to the farm page! This all took place on Tuesday!!
Just when you think lambing is going well......Last night around 10:30, "50" was in labor, having her first lamb around 11:45pm. Betsey was a couple stalls down in labor, Mama was also showing signs of labor, as well as Candy. 50 had her 1st lamb, and after 90 minutes decided to produce the 2nd lamb, meanwhile Betsey, was "struggling" pushing out her 17lb single ram lamb, so I helped. I didn't get to bed until 3am. 6:30 this morning Dan and I were watching Candy lamb her twins. Meanwhile Mama was somewhat pushing, and had some dried, dirty membrane hanging from her. Before Dan left to go do paperwork for his new job, he held Mama while I went in to see what is wrong. I pulled the lamb, who wasn't too big. Mama usually has twins, so I left her to clean the 1st baby and have the 2nd one- normally they kinda fall right out after the first.....about a half hour later, after Dan left, I saw a head and one hoof. Normally that would go pretty easy. Push the head and leg back into the birth canal grab both legs situate the head and pull. Definitely not the case this time. The lambs head would not fit.... could not get it pulled back into the brith canal with the legs. Tried to use the lamb snare, still nothing. I even had Mama's hide end over a straw bale to help slide the lamb back down to reposition it. Nothing. By this point my mom- who had been watching the barn cameras had come to try and help assist. I had been in communication with not one, but three different veterinary practices, and nobody can come out. Dan left early from his sign in at the new job. We hooked up the trailer and drove her to Northern vet services. It took both the vet and me to pull the lamb. This lamb is not that big. I believe Mama may be getting to old and needs to retire. After over 2 hours of being stuck the lamb came out with a faint heartbeat! We all thought by now that it had passed. A couple shots, tubing, and time, she is now out with her sister and mom learning how to live life! I also rolled my ankle (again) trying to hook up the stock trailer and stepped into a chicken dust bath hole and the bruising is starting on both hands from her pelvis.....fun times! That being said....there was a beautiful moon last night, amazing weather, and healthy lambs. I also found humor in Candy giving her ewe lamb a placenta neck tie.
