Projects, projects, and more projects.
About three years ago, we worked with our local NRCS office and were selected to receive funding assistance for a variety of projects around the farm. The latest project, a cattle water pipeline that we just finished up in October. This is a huge milestone for our farm and it feels like the kind of project you stand back and admire for a minute. 😊
It started with meetings with the NRCS engineers to make sure every detail met compliance and design criteria. From there came sourcing materials from multiple suppliers, some local, some out of state, and lining up a mini excavator rental that matched our chaotic schedule and dry weather. Once equipment hit the ground, we trenched over 1,000 feet to lay the buried water line, installed hydrants, connected all the underground plumbing, and backfilled every inch, pulling out big rocks so nothing would damage the pipeline.
Bret mastered even more plumbing work while installing the geothermal tube, riser pipe, and shut-off valve, then moved on to prepping the concrete pad. That meant shooting laser grades, cutting out high spots and organic material, and leveling everything with precision so the two-ball waterer would sit perfectly and both balls would float and seat as designed. We coordinated the concrete crew’s schedule with the NRCS inspector to ensure best practices were followed during the pour. Beforehand, Bret worked closely with the ready-mix company to confirm the concrete met the specified design mix. Once the pad cured, it was all about setting the water tank in place and making sure the leveling was dialed in.
In addition to the geothermal system, we added a surface water line that now runs along several fence lines, giving us reliable summer water access in multiple pastures. The moment we saw water spraying at the far end of the farm and then watched the cattle walk up and drink from the two-ball waterer like seasoned pros, was honestly the best feeling. A whole lot of planning, digging, coordinating, and precision came together, and seeing it work exactly as it should made every long day worth it.
