By now you may have seen this article from Global News on the dangers of feeding raw meat to your pet and perhaps you have some questions?? Is feeding raw really as dangerous as this article says?
Well, first there are a few things that the article didn’t mention.
1st - This study is based out the Netherlands. Do raw diets in Europe (or the ones used in this study) come from CFIA or inspected suppliers OR do these raw pet foods come from “pet food grade” supply? This means that the meat may be denatured, past date or contain parasites or higher then normal levels of bacteria. Big Country Raw uses only human grade CFIA inspected meats and fruit & vegetables. We also use the highest standards in food processing including HCAPP and GMP to ensure our foods are high quality and safe for both your pet that consumes it but also the family members that handle and prepare the food. And additionally it should be mentioned that although bacteria may be found in raw meat the potential for bacteria exists in even kibble diets, and there has been many recalls on kibble diets for this very reason.
2nd - All raw meat has the potential to contain harmful bacteria and yet families regularly cook and prepare foods for their family everyday. Certainly it’s necessary to clean utensils, serving bowls and counters after preparing foods. However, no one is widely concerned about the safety of families when bringing raw meat home for the family. Simply handle and store the raw meat diet in the same safe manner you do for meats you would prepare for your family, to ensure your pet and the person preparing the food won’t get sick either.
3rd - Big Country Raw diets contain the correct nutrients to provide your pet with optimal health. The nutrient unbalanced mentioned in this article maybe because most researchers consider AAFCO as the only standard by which pet foods should be qualified. Raw fresh foods are much more bioavailable meaning absorption and digestible is significantly improved. Also most commercially prepared diets rely on balance over time using protein rotation, and supplementation with add-on sides and treats to add trace vitamins and minerals that can offer additional nutrient support.
Overall our conclusion on this article is that once again there are significant “holes” in the research. These arguments have been proven to be vastly exaggerated regarding the risks of feeding fresh raw foods to your pet in the past.
For further research on studies to help alleviate concerns you may get from friends and family on why you would continue to feed raw in light of this “new” information we would suggest the following:
