Nobody warned me that baby ducks would become my boys’ shadows. 🥹🦆

These two surprise additions to the farm have spent the last few days following the kids everywhere they go. Safe to say they’re settling in just fine.

Tour our farm nursery for baby chicks and ducks.

Here are some of our features:
1) Easy open gate that kids can open and can be opened one handed
2) Hardware mesh on the top and bottom for predator proofing
3) Built in coop for extra security and warmth at night
4) Kiddie pool with steps for the baby ducks
5) Ability for the flock to see the babies for a smoother integration when they are older
6) Half the run covered for rain protection, the other half just hardware mesh for sunlight
7) Natural branches and stumps for the babies to play on and look for bugs

Still a work in progress but we love it so far

Meet the newest additions to Begg Haven Farm!

These two surprise ducklings joined our flock this week and are already settling right in with the baby chicks. We even built them their own little pool, which they approved immediately!

So far, everyone is getting along beautifully and the ducklings have quickly become the entertainment committee around the farm.

Watching these tiny fluff balls throw dirt over their heads is one of the cutest parts of raising chicks.

3 fun facts about baby chicks and dust bathing:

1) Chicks instinctively know how to dust bathe.

2) Dust baths help keep feathers clean and free of parasites.

3) They don’t need water to stay clean. Chickens use dust to absorb excess oils and debris from their feathers.

This little chick wasn’t supposed to make it. She hatched FOUR days after her 11 siblings.

The egg hadn’t been sat on in days. We had no idea it was even viable. By pure luck, I noticed a crack in the shell and heard the tiniest chirp.

Suddenly we were throwing together a brooder and a temporary coop to keep her safe while she dried off and to make sure the older chicks didn’t pick on her during those first critical 48 hours.

While the brooder warmed up, she was wrapped up in my 4 year old’s shirt to stay warm (he was very happy to sacrifice it to save the baby chick).

The second night, after everyone was asleep, we tucked her under Mama Mabel and hoped for the best.

The next morning she woke up as part of the family. Now she’s the youngest of the bunch, learning fast and doing her best to keep up with siblings that are four days older than she is.

Mabel out here teaching 11 tiny fluff balls how to be chickens while I’m just trying to keep count of everybody.

Watching them follow mama around, copy everything she does and pile under (or on) her wings is the cutest thing ever. Still don’t know how she hatched 11 babies but she’s doing it like an absolute pro.

I guess the secret hatchery turned into the sweetest little family.
