Ever thought about planting a small home orchard? 🍏
At Vintage Virginia Apples we talk to a lot of people who want to grow their own fruit trees, but are intimidated by the number of issues that have to be considered, including:
• Site selection
• Varieties to plant
• Rootstock
• Insect and disease control
• Pruning and
• Pollination
The amount of information that is out there can be overwhelming. Just getting started is often the biggest obstacle.
While we try to offer advice and guidance throughout the year, we are not always available for more in depth and comprehensive assistance. But we do offer a great solution! For many years we have sponsored an all-day workshop on Planning and Planting the Home Orchard.
Led by our Rich Marini (a national expert on fruit growing) participants will come away with in depth information and materials that will help to demystify what you need to consider in getting started with your own orchard.
Rich is a Professor of Horticulture at Penn State University and was previously at Virginia Tech. His research and advice have benefited orchards throughout the mid-Atlantic
region. Rich works hard to tailor this workshop to the level of the audience and previous evaluations have confirmed that participants find the day informative and beneficial.
Participants also receive a copy of one of the better resource books on orcharding to provide ongoing access to the best information available to support your home orcharding experience.
If you are interested, this years Planning and Planting the Home Orchard workshop is on October 24th .
