Did you know pumpkins are pollinated by bees?? Male pumpkin flowers are the first to appear, blooming one to two weeks before female flowers. These pollen-producing flowers develop on the ends of long, thin vines and contain a ring of hair-like stamens in the center of their open petals. Female flowers produce pumpkins and are identified easily by the small, bulbous growth at the base of the flower. The stems of female flowers are shorter and thicker than those of the male flowers. Thank you Bees!

Spot the yellow clumps on the bees legs? That’s pollen coming in!

Pollen provides protein and other nutrients for the bees, especially the baby bees aka larva. Depending on where and what they are harvesting, bees bring in different colored pollen. Stay tuned- as more plants start to bloom, I’ll post the different colors of pollen in the honey comb.
