Rugged Road Farms

Rugged Road Farms We are a hobby farm located in the California mother lode. In a small area known as Hangtown and Mudsprings.

We raise goats, chickens, ducks, pigs, and the occasional bottle baby. In the summer of 2021 our family was expanded with Alpaca!

Jennifer’s jungle garden is filled out nicely and her dehydration “system” has been nonstop.

We were able to get the alpaca sheered and donated the fiber to the local fiber guild.

Unfortunately the crop of pasture grasses didn’t take, so I will be looking at other ideas for fall. Hopefully we can get the drainage system figured out and done by then. 🤷‍♂️.

Today we started a little retreat for Addison and her friends for the summer. Addison did most of the work herself! We chose road base as a floor material, and she operated the compactor. Then put together her gazebo kit with some help from Jennifer and myself. Now is the decorating phase 🎈. Looks like I may have lost my new table and chairs.

We have been quite busy here on the farm. The plumbing is in for the upper part of the garden and the rock walls. The ground cover is spread out. And today is box building day 😃! Jennifer learned to build some and built 2!!!! Hooray 😃!! She also did ALL the hard labor for the plumbing (aka the digging 😂)! Her bean/pea arbor is ready for dirt as well.

As for the pasture: not much to report, yet. Some of the grasses are starting to sprout 🌱.

It’s been a bit slow for posts lately, but this is where we are now. Most of the garden is in and the ground cover was decided on and delivered. Had to get the trees trimmed up before we were able to move on in the garden area. The fruit trees are budding!!!!! We got some last minute lettuce and spinach in the ground.

As for the the back side: the alfalfa and other pasture grasses are finally starting to germinate!!! Hopefully once it starts to fill in (if the alpaca don’t eat it!) I will get some more pictures back there. Otherwise the animals are happy and enjoying the nice weather.

Every morning Anne is at the gate waiting on me for breakfast! Gotta love these alpaca!

With some help from Addison (learning to remove stumps), and Dave (my dad) installing the donation from Dave and Valmarie Duncan (our neighbors). Thank you very much for our new bridge!

Also, after some slight miscalculations on my part, a new gate was required. I built and installed a larger one. So after enlarging the opening and pathway in everything had to be regraded. Time for another chip drop!

The garden area is starting to fill up. Some fruit trees planted in the back. With all these boxes unfortunately we are going to have to purchase soil this time!

With a few setbacks: Not enough dirt, an emergency surgery (on my part), several planning days. We are back on schedule. The top corner rock retaining wall is about halfway done. Then we start on the lower rock wall. Then next step is the garden boxes and ground cover.

This is where we started, an overgrown lot that was abandoned and neglected for way to long. We removed most of the brush and dead down trees. Then re-fenced adding gates, to enclose and secure the property. Luckily my parents had just got a new tractor for us to take advantage of 😉!
