Driven: We look for interns who are ready to put in real work from the start, not interns looking for a slow ramp-up. Our administrative interns are handling real cattle desk transactions and commodity analysis early on — the actual financial backbone of a cattle feeding operation. Our feedyard interns are out in it from day one — animal care, equipment, the daily grind that keeps a yard running smoothly, rain or shine.

It's a lot of real responsibility, handed to you fast. But for the right person, that's exactly what makes the summer worth it — you leave knowing you did the work, not just watched it happen.

Innovative: This industry looks traditional from the road. On the inside, we've had interns put solar panels on our feedlot shade structures, redesign our scale system, and — on the office side — pick up a brand-new tracking system fast enough to help teach the rest of the team through the switchover. All three are still paying off today because they actually worked, not because they made a good presentation slide.

If you're the type who notices a problem and can't leave it alone, that instinct gets put to real use here — on the yard, in the office, wherever it shows up.

Beef Northwest runs two tracks through Prime Start each year: a Feedyard Program that follows cattle to harvest, and a Breeding Program — done in partnership with Wilson Cattle Co. — where students work a herd through calving season.

Six Umatilla County high schoolers get in each year. Beef Northwest covers the animal, the feed, and the vet care. Students get one-on-one mentorship from BNW staff, monthly Tailgate Talks, and keep the profits their project earns.

No prior experience required — just a willingness to show up. You'll need a recommendation letter from an ag teacher or advisor and a parent or guardian able to sign off. Applications close December 4th.

Curious: Maybe you've never set foot on a feedyard. Maybe you have, and never thought much past what you could see from the road. Maybe you grew up around cattle and have always wanted to understand this end of the business — the part after the ranch, before the plate.

Whatever brought you here, that's enough. Our feedyard operations interns don't get stuck in one lane — they move through every department, from equipment and animal care to milling and office work, until they actually understand how the whole thing runs. No experience required. Just the willingness to ask questions and figure it out.

What did you want to be when you grow up?

Some of our interns knew early — grew up on a ranch, always planned on agriculture, feedyards weren't new to them. Others found their way here differently — an ag degree, a business program, or just a good opportunity they figured they'd try, not expecting to love it as much as they did.

However they got here, what they find is a summer built around five things. Curious is enough to start — you don't need experience walking in. Innovative ideas actually get built, not just discussed — past interns have left real projects still running on our yards today. Driven people get handed real work instead of busywork, almost immediately. Capable is something you become by the end of it, not something you claim on a resume before you've earned it. And rooted is what happens if you decide to stay — a lot of our current team started exactly where this year's interns are starting now.

Three tracks. Four locations. One program that's been turning students into cattlemen and women since 2003.

We love making this announcement - SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS!
Once again, we had a great group of employee dependents apply for our employee scholarship for the 2026-2027 school year. These students are seeking a range of post-secondary education, like dental hygiene, helicopter pilot, engineering and Animal Science & Agribusiness - and we are proud to be a small part in their educational journey 🌟🍎✏️

Last Friday Beef Northwest had the opportunity to participate in the SAGE Center's Science Fridays. BNW presented on "Beef Basics", covering topics like how cattle get from pasture to your plate, cattle by-products and sustainability.

We had a great time chatting with the kids and sharing more about ag and food production. Thanks to the SAGE Center for hosting such an amazing event for the community and for asking us join in on the fun!

Summer Internships are well on their way at BNW! In the upcoming weeks we will start to introduce these outstanding students and see what they will be up to this summer.

Our Summer Internships are a chance to get real, hands-on experience in beef production — not just shadow someone. We're glad to have another amazing team this summer!
