Pattern breeders, meet Snowmass Styx. He's a rare-patterned show quality Snowmass Divine Optics son out of one of our top black dams. He has a striking black and brown patterned fleece with a true black head and neck, lower legs and tail. His body has a varied, almost tortoiseshell like pattern of black, brown and fawn fleece with the highest contrast appearing along his topline. We believe he will also roan out this coming year as we see some silvering in his neck. Grid sample OFDA 100 histogram at approximately 11 months: 18.3/3.8/20.7/0.6 with 137mm unshorn growth. He's has inherited an Ee aa genotype of some sort from his parents - different mutations to ASIP may also be involved in producing this pattern. He'll be on our fall show string if he is not on yours. Inquires to [email protected]

The most useful breeding advice I ever read came from a cattle breeder who said the best way to improve your program was not to picture the perfect animal and breed towards that ideal, but instead study your culls to see why you were culling them, and then breed to improve that trait or traits. Intrigued, I looked at my notes to see why I had chosen to NOT use or sell the males I culled from my program as fiber animals and found a consistent pattern: I culled animals for a lack of density, too much hair, and/or an unattractive head style. So I focused on those things rather than breeding for the "complete package" every time. And sure enough in the years since density and uniformity have improved substantially on average in my herd, and head styles are less variable, without any loss in overall quality. I think that modest-seeming perspective shift ended up being a big deal for us - we made faster progress with it. Wish I could credit the breeder who wrote the article but I can't find it anymore.

This may be controversial, but we think white animals of this caliber belong in every color breeding program. White and beige animals represent over a quarter of all animals being registered and are a repository of elite fleece genetics. Exclude them and you'll make your breeding program less competitive. These you can buy now, at the POC. Clockwise from top left: Lot 2, Lot 14, Lot 32, Lot 34, Lot 21, Lot 10. When you check the catalog you'll find even more. https://paradeofchampionsauction.com/

A reminder of why we like staple length in a juvi even if it means a silky, open-looking first fleece: the left image is Snowmass Best Bet's first fleece, the middle is his third, and the right is his eighth. Best Bet wasn't much of one in the show ring: he placed third in his single outing as yearling, with the judge noting an apparent lack of density and a bolder style, both impressions that were a function of the exceptional staple growth he was producing at that time. As his fleece growth slowed into maturity, its crimp frequency increased and his true density became more apparent. Now at age eight he continues to produce a fine fleece with "long" processing length -- that, and some of the best animals we have ever produced at Snowmass. Don't be to quick to judge those silky first fleeces!

We are breeding the no-dilution female at left to the national champion white at right to produce an extraordinary fawn -- and we're selling the dam! She's Lot 9 in the POC, and a great chance to buy our best cria of 2027 :-).

How's this for luxurious abundance on the grading table. We prize Accoyo America Polar Storm for the density, brightness, staple length and excellent head styles he imparts to his offspring and later descendants. Shown here: POC lot 21, the Polar Storm daughter Delightful Storm, on the left, and the granddaughter Divine Romance on the right. Both are outstanding and would be great choices to bring the Oblivion line into your breeding program via your service sire choice.. Delightful Storm covers black with the a1 allele.

We're very proud of the two black females we have in the POC auction: On the left is the fleece of the no-dilution EE a1a3 female Royal Fantasy XX (Lot 20) and on the right is the deep black Ee a2a2 Accoyo America Charlotte (Lot 27). Both fleeces will impress with their volume, uniformity and brightness-- your decision may come down to the varied bloodlines each bring to the table. We can pair either of them with a no-dilution black male to produce a black cria for your program in 2027. Contact us with questions.
