Hi! We've welcomed so many new faces here lately, so I thought it was the perfect time to reintroduce ourselves and share a little about the people behind Petal & Stem Farm.

I'm Jamie, the owner of Petal & Stem Farm. I started the farm in 2021 after falling in love with the world of cut flowers, but flowers weren't always the plan.

I grew up on my family's 3rd-generation farm, where growing things has always been a way of life. Our family business grows and sells vegetable and flower plant starts, so having my hands in the soil is something I've done for as long as I can remember.

During COVID, I fell down the rabbit hole of cut flowers. It was just a dream I didn’t ever think would come true. But before I knew it, I was planning what would eventually become Petal & Stem Farm.

In 2023, Matt came into my life and quickly became a huge part of the business. He's always loved gardening and growing things, so he fit right into this flower farming life. Most of the dahlia videos you see are filmed and edited by him, and together we've loved sharing what we've learned through YouTube and social media.

These days, we're balancing life between Connecticut and Rhode Island while continuing to grow Petal & Stem. As we're building our future together, we've decided to put much of our focus into dahlias.

We're excited for what's ahead and can't wait to see where this journey takes us. Until then, we'll keep planting, growing, learning, and sharing it all with you.

Thank you for being here. Whether you've followed us from the beginning or just found our page, we're so grateful for your support. This little flower farm wouldn't be what it is without all of you. 🤍

There are definitely days we’d rather stay curled up on the couch. Especially on cold, rainy days. But when you’re flower farmers, the work still has to get done.

The last two weeks have been nonstop as we finished prepping all of our dahlia beds, and we’re finally ready to start planting today 🙌🏼 There’s still so much work ahead of us, but this season waits for no one, and the dahlias need to get in the ground.

Funny enough, this reel was supposed to be posted two weeks ago 😅 But that’s the reality of this season sometimes. We get so busy doing the actual work that social media has to take a back seat, even though it’s such a huge part of growing our business. It can be hard to show everything happening behind the scenes when every spare minute is spent trying to keep up.

So while we may dream about slow couch days, farm life usually has other plans!

Now lets get this field planted!

What a couple of weekends it’s been! Between our in-person sale and our Mother’s Day orders, we are feeling incredibly grateful. Thank you so much to everyone who supported us, whether you stopped by to shop, placed an order, shared a post, or simply cheered us on. We appreciate our customers more than you know, and it was so wonderful seeing both new and familiar faces. 💕

This is the first year since I’ve started the business that I wasn’t running around like a chicken with my head cut off for a Mother’s Day event and it felt pretty good! Last season we decided that we weren’t growing spring flowers this year to align with this years goals and work life balance. It was weird, and am TOTALLY missing ranunculus and tulips, but it was a good decision for us mentally. And I finally got to spend the day with mom without dragging her to an event 😂. Thank you, mom, for always being a trooper!

We hope everyone had a great Mother’s Day and got to enjoy time with their loved ones!

Now it’s time to shift gears and get back out to the field. Finishing prepping everything before planting season officially begins!

Here’s our more detailed version of how we take cuttings on dahlias!

1. Wake up your tubersPlace tubers in slightly damp soil or potting mix and keep them warm with good light. Wait until sprouts are about 3–6 inches tall.

2. Take the cuttingUsing clean, sharp snips or X-Acto knife, cut the sprout right at the base where it meets the tuber. Don’t worry, the tuber will push new shoots!

3. Remove lower leavesStrip the bottom leaves so you have a clean stem to root.

4. Optional rooting hormoneDip the end in rooting hormone to speed things up (helpful but not required). We place rooting hormone on individual leaves that we stripped each time to avoid disease spreading.

5. Plant the cuttingPlace the stem into moist potting mix in a pot or tray. Gently firm soil around it.
You want to keep cuttings warm, in plenty of light, and lightly moist. We use a spray bottle to moisten the leaves 2-3 times a day until they root.
In about 2–3 weeks, roots will form and you’ll have a brand new dahlia plant ready to grow!

Bonus: The original tuber will keep producing more shoots, so you can take multiple cuttings from one plant. We take anywhere from 3-5 cuttings on each tuber so we can still plant out the original mother tuber without taking away all its energy.

Save this, your future self will thank you 🌸

If I look a tired and start acting a little unhinged this season, now you know why 🙃

I grew up on a farm, but I was always told the “right” path was to go to school, get a good education, and find a stable career. And for a long time, I tried to believe that was the only way.

But no matter what I did, I kept finding myself back outside, hands in the dirt, heart on the farm.

When I was younger, I was the kid always rushing to sports, practices, and games… but the second I got home, I was outside again. As I got older, I fell in love with watching my dad grow flowers and vegetables. There was something about seeing something tiny turn into something beautiful that just stuck with me.

Eventually, I stumbled into the world of cut flower farming. Something totally new to me, but somehow it felt like coming home. My family’s business had always been about growing and selling the plant started, but I wanted more. I wanted to take it to the next step. I wanted to grow the flowers, share them, and brighten someone’s day with something that came from my hands and my heart.

Then Covid hit, and while the world stopped, something in me pushed forward. I finally gave myself permission to run with the dream I’d been carrying for years. And I haven’t looked back since.

Following your dream isn’t always the comfortable choice, but it’s always the right one when it’s the one that keeps calling you back.
