A Greener Sort of Green
Being “green” is nothing new at Shire Tree Farm. From our beginning 35 years ago we have been committed to being responsible stewards of the land and good neighbors to our community. We use NO pesticides in the production of our trees or greens. How many other growers can make that claim? In addition, we use renewable energy for our electricity and heating needs.
Shire Tree Farm provides valuable wildlife habitat and is home to deer, foxes, coyotes, raccoons, rabbits, groundhogs, squirrels, opposums, hawks, turkeys, ducks, geese and numerous songbirds. Our tree field helps filter the water that makes its way into the north branch of the Pawtuxet River, state-designated trout waters.
We care for our trees on average 10-12 years before they are harvested and sold. The young trees we transplant into the field each year are typically 5 years old and they grow to maturity in another 7-8 years. During this time each tree is trimmed every year to get that perfect shape. Fertilizer is applied as needed, the fields are kept mowed and adequate water is provided.
