Part of our homeschooling we go out on property and explore. We find herbs and things and do some research on them. Can they be used to benefit us in any way? Do they have any medicinal properties?
After we’ve done some research we go back out and pick things we’d like to use. This is an every week thing we do and today was a good day for harvesting some things not only from the back but from our garden too.
Here’s today’s pickings.
Left to right. Basil, an herb we use daily mostly for food or water but surprise it also can be used for reducing inflammation, supporting digestion, and supplying antioxidants.
Joe-pye w**d can be used to combat fever, rheumatism, and gallstones, as well as kidney related issues like UTIs and fluid retention; it’s well known as a diuretic.
Sage has such a wild range of goodness. Sage is packed with over 160 antioxidants that can help protect against chronic diseases, support brain function, and lower blood sugar and cholesterol levels. Research suggests sage may support oral health by fighting cavity-causing bacteria, ease menopause symptoms like hot flashes, and improve memory in people with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease.
Catmint can relieve tension and improve sleep quality, aid digestive problems such as upset stomachs, excessive gas, diarrhea, and nausea. It’s also good for respiratory problems such as cold, cough, and chest congestion. Catmint could also help to relieve stomach pain and menstrual cramps too.
Mint helps with everything from digestion and blood flow to coughing and inflammation. It’s also loaded with antioxidants!
Common boneset helps resolve fevers, stimulates immunity, and eases cold or flu symptoms. It can also help with easing upper or lower respiratory infections.
Heal-all (not pictured because the wind took it down as I was taking the picture). Historically used in folk herbalism as a “wound herb” applied topically for minor injuries, or brewed as a gargle for throat ailments like tonsillitis and sore throats. Tinctures and teas are also made for their purported antioxidant and antiviral properties. So it’s true to its name!

These will all be used in some way to help heal!

Let’s chat products!
First on my list is our eczema soap and salve!

It starts with the soap. Used just as you would any other bar soap while showering, scrub up and create a good lather then rinse.
Our soap is filled with so many amazing things like chamomile. Chamomile has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and relaxing properties. Calendula, promotes tissue repair and reduces inflammation. Licorice root brightens skin tone, fades dark spots, and soothes inflammation. Tumeric might be the star of the show which to many is unexpected but here goes!! Tumeric has all the anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties that can improve skin health and appearance. It fights acne, soothes psoriasis and eczema, brightens complexion, reduces dark spots, and aids with wound healing. Put all these amazing things together with some goats milk and BOOM! We have an amazing product I am so excited to finally share with you.

Next we have our salve. Same ingredients plus and minus a few.. jojoba oil is used to deeply moisturize the skin, balance natural oil production, and fight harmful bacteria. Coconut oil acts as a powerful natural moisturizer and protective barrier that locks in hydration and reduces dryness. Beeswax is used to thicken the salve and form a breathable barrier that locks in moisture and fights irritants. Calendula soothes skin irritations, reduces visible redness, and speeds up minor wound healing. Yarrow, helps heal minor wounds, soothe skin inflammation, and reduce visible redness. Chamomile soothes irritation, calms redness, and supports skin healing. You already know what tumeric is doing and same goes for licorice root! Plantain leaf is a common w**d that offers powerful natural healing benefits for the skin like healing wounds, calming inflammation, and reducing redness and irritations. Aloe Vera gel is one you’re familiar with! It speeds up healing, reduces inflammation, and supply’s lightweight moisture. Lavender soothes inflammation, reduces breakouts, and supports healing.

These two products together are a knockout punch to any skin irritations like eczema, psoriasis, acne, allergens, or just dryness.

Let’s chat some of the things you’re going to see pop-up around you and in your yard (if you’re lucky). One of my favorites is Jewelw**d!

Jewelw**d (Impatiens capensis) is a natural plant remedy best known for soothing poison ivy, easing bug bites, and calming skin inflammation. Its fresh stem juice or extracts contain natural compounds like lawsone and saponins that act as gentle anti-inflammatories and antihistamines.

To use, break a piece off and chew or chop it up and apply it directly to the area needing relief. It helps prevent or reduce the severity of rashes and itching from poison ivy, oak, and sumac. Calms the redness, swelling, and itchiness caused by mosquito bites and stinging nettle.
Anti-Inflammatory properties! Lowers skin irritation and general discomfort from minor scrapes or minor skin bumps.
Anti-fungal Properties! Used traditionally to help clear minor fungal issues like athlete’s foot or ringworm.

So many ways to use this amazing plant but as I said above, you can break the juicy, hollow stem of a live plant and rub the fresh liquid directly onto the affected skin. You can make a salve or balm, or one of my go-to’s is a spray!

If you have this plant in your yard don’t pull it but take some good clippings and utilize it just like our ancestors did!
