Scary day on the homestead today 🥺

I heard the chickens making noise outside and went over to the slider to see what was going on. I saw something in the leaves along the fence line and couldn’t tell if it was one of our girls. I opened the slider and a hawk flew out of our yard into a nearby tree. I yelled for Chris and ran outside. All of our chickens were hiding, and one of our sweet Dominique girls was on her side/back in the leaves where the hawk had just left.

I thought she was dead/dying. I could see that she was still breathing, but she was stiff as a board and her eyes were rolling back in her head. Jillian grabbed a towel (while sobbing) and I carefully wrapped her and brought her inside while Chris got the rest of the birds in their coops.

Miraculously, besides losing some feathers, she is uninjured. I think the hawk pinned her to the ground and stunned her, but he wasn’t able to do any damage before I scared him away.

She is back out with her sisters, and we will have to add some extra predator-proofing measures to make sure this never happens again! But for now, we are extremely grateful ❤️
