No-till doesn't eliminate w**ds. It eliminates w**d days.
We hear this all the time:
"I tried no-till and I still got w**ds."
And that's true.
No-till doesn't mean zero w**ds.
It means fewer w**ds, easier w**ds, and a system that's actually manageable.

Here's how it works:
When you till, you disturb the soil seed bank - bringing buried w**d seeds to the surface where they can germinate. Every time you till, you're essentially planting w**ds.

In a no-till system you never disturb the ground. Instead we apply a top dressing of clean, w**d-free compost, which acts as a natural mulch and suppresses germination. In the paths we use wood chips for the same reason. The whole system is designed to work with the soil, not against it.
Gardening is still work. But if you truly love growing food - and we do - it hardly feels like it.

There's something magical about growing healthy, vibrant food for your family and your community. That's what keeps us going.

🚨Bad Boys Part 4: Don't Give Them a Chance

"If you don't till, how can you grow root crops?"
We get this question all the time.
The answer is simple:

Healthy soil biology does the loosening for you.

As organic matter accumulates and the soil remains undisturbed, earthworms create tunnels, roots leave behind channels, fungi help bind soil particles together, and the soil structure develops incredibly. Over time, the soil becomes more friable, more aerated, and easier for roots to pe*****te.

That doesn't mean every carrot will be perfect from day one.
We want to be honest about that.
In newer no-till systems- especially those starting with compacted soil - you MAY have some smaller, forked, or misshapen root crops at first. That's completely normal and part of the transition.
Early on, we occasionally used a broadfork in some of our root crop beds to gently loosen pre-existing compacted soil. Looking back, if we were starting over, we wouldn't bother. We'd be more patient, trust the system, and let the biology do the work. That said, if using a broadfork helps you feel more comfortable making the transition, that's OK.

The goal isn't perfection.
The goal is healthier soil.

And as the soil improves, root crops will improve with it.
Today, some of our favorite crops to grow are carrots, daikon radishes, and parsnips. They THRIVE in our no-till system, produce beautiful roots, and the flavor and texture are incredible.
So don't let a love of root crops stop you from trying no-till 🌱

We do not spray anything. Ever. 🌿
And we want to talk about why — because there’s one BIG misconception we hear all the time:
A lot of people think “organic = spray free.”
But certified organic farms can use sprays — they’re just organic-approved.
Most of them are considered low-risk when used correctly…
but some (like copper, sulfur, pyrethrins) still come with real tradeoffs — for the soil, for beneficial insects, and for human exposure (especially for the people applying them).

Sprays we mentioned + where they’re commonly used:
Copper → tomatoes, potatoes, cucumbers/squash
Sulfur → cucumbers/squash, onions, potatoes
Pyrethrins → leafy greens, brassicas, peppers
Spinosad → leafy greens, brassicas, strawberries
Neem/Azadirachtin → cucurbits + greens

💡 Our biggest tip: buy from growers you can actually talk to.

Ask: “Do you spray? If yes, what and how often?”
Because trust doesn’t come from a label…
it comes from transparency. 🤍

What can one small farm do in a year?
On just a ¼ acre of land, 2025 brought ~7,560 lbs of food, 48 different vegetables and herbs, pasture-raised chickens, and a season shaped by drought and resilience.

By growing and buying local, YOU avoided ~1.26 million food miles — the equivalent of ~504 metric tons of CO₂.

Not pictured:
one fallen willow 🌳
one tiny house + Airbnb farm stay built and opened 🛖
and so much more than we could ever fit into one reel.

No sprays. No shortcuts. Just healthy soil, local food, and a community that showed up week after week.

Countless laughs shared.
Grateful for each and every one of you. 💚
We’re so excited to keep growing, building, and learning with you in 2026 — and to continue showing what small farms can do when they’re supported.
