A Whale of a Time, Learning a Whale of a Lot

As we rounded the last few miles of the Gaspesien coast of Quebec toward our ninth port of call, Charlie asked what my favorite part of our trip was so far. Three sprang top of mind: the daisy-drenched duck farm, whale watching in Tadoussac, and the nuclear sunset on the bluff in Cap-Chat. I’ve already written about the duck farm. Maine in May, Canada en Juin

Hanging with Yogi Bear at Jellystone Park on Androscoggin Lake for 10 days wasn’t too bad. The campground emptied out after the Memorial Day weekend was over, so we had our lakefront spot to ourselves. For the rest of our stay there was never a line for the laundry, it was much quieter, and the golf carts were few. Plus no one was there to laugh when we capsized the canoe. ...

Camp Life on the Casco

I expected a few people would balk when they learned of our half-baked plans to travel, sail and write. We had no schedule beyond spending the first three weeks at Wolfe’s Neck Oceanfront Campground on the Casco Bay in Maine, limited sailing experience, and who doesn’t think they’re going to write a book some day? But instead of telling us we’re crazy old people for leaving the familiar comfort of our farm life on Thompson Hill, we’ve been met with unfailing enthusiasm and helpful recommendations....

Settling In Twelve days in to our two-year odyssey, Charlie and I are settling in to our camper home. It may be the honeymoon phase talking, but it’s like playing house with my best friend again. Arranging and rearranging items in our miniature abode, preparing meals in a one-butt kitchenette, throwing dinner parties in our tiny banquette, cuddling together watching movies on a laptop screen....

Trading Signs: Hitting the Road

The signs kept popping up. It started with COVID. Not the virus itself, horrific as it was. The problem for us came when meat producers in the Midwest were forced to look for processors farther afield as sickness and restrictions hobbled the plants.
