I’m getting to a place where I’m growing a lot of my own food again and it feels amazing. A few years ago it was all my vegetables, all my meats, most of my own dairy. I’m not there yet, but I grew the cabbage, potatoes and bacon and I baked my bread from scratch. Baby steps back to my previous self...

With all these easy internet gardening “hacks”, it’s no wonder new gardeners get discouraged. I just watched a potato planting tutorial where they planted red seed potatoes, did a time elapse that showed the “potato” foliage as pepper plants and harvested white potatoes. Heck, I’ve got a pretty good green thumb and I don’t think I could pull that one off 🙄

Those farms and local producers you’re flocking to right now because the grocery stores are out of product? Don’t forget them once this is over. These are your neighbors risking their lives to keep you fed!

Butter is waiting for me to leave so she can dig up and eat the organic fertilizer I put on the potatoes.

My apologies if you’ve seen these photos on my personal page.

This years garden has been my therapy. Small in size (20’ x 120’, though I will have to expand it to accommodate summer crops such as corn and watermelons), I have worked to add a variety of things so that I don’t tire of eating from it. I have 4 types of onions, 2 varieties each of cabbage and broccoli, 4 types of potatoes, artichokes, radishes, broccoli raab, beets, cucumbers, parsley, lemongrass, oregano, cilantro and a lone shish*to pepper. A heirloom tomato called “Banana Legs” just because the name made me laugh. And a huge stack of mushroom logs to inoculate. What’s in your garden?

It’s a great day to stay home and start seeds. In addition to vegetables, I plant a lot of flowers for pollinators, herbs and some “oddballs” such as loofah.

Quick tip: if you buy herb seedlings, look for pots that have the seedlings spaced the farthest apart. You can then divide them and repot in pots or in the ground to give each plant more room to grow. Try to give each seedling a good chunk of original soil to preserve as much root as possible.

The first step in planning a vegetable garden is to determine your hardiness zone. In simple terms, this helps you determine when it’s safe to start planting in the spring and when to expect the first fall frost so that you can plan to harvest any cold tender vegetables before the frost kills them. Your hardiness zone can also help you pick plants that are suitable for your climate. Most areas around Charlotte, NC are 7a/b to 8a/b. I am 8a. See the link below to determine your hardiness zone by zip code.

One of the hardest things about putting the Farm on pause was admitting I was over my head and rehoming animals I had devoted years of my life to. The goats went to a friend that has a great farm just down the road from me and it warms my heart to see her new babies from my old babies.
