🐔 Let’s talk about Dry Fowl Pox! 🐔
Unfortunately, we’ve been dealing with a little bit of dry fowl pox in our flock here at Green Acres Hobby Farm. 😩 Thankfully, the dry form is usually the less serious form, but those little dark scabs on their combs, wattles, and around their faces can definitely look scary!
Dry fowl pox is a viral disease in chickens that can spread through mosquito bites or contact with infected birds, scabs, surfaces, and equipment. There isn’t a medication that cures the virus itself, so for now we’re focusing on keeping everyone comfortable, keeping their environment clean, watching closely for any secondary infections, and letting their immune systems do their thing. 💪🐓
The biggest thing is DO NOT pick the scabs off! They need to dry up and fall off naturally. Those scabs can also contain the virus, so keeping things clean and practicing good biosecurity is important.
Most otherwise healthy chickens with the dry form recover, but we’re keeping a close eye on everyone—especially for any sores inside the mouth or throat, trouble eating or drinking, breathing problems, or anyone acting unusually sick, since those symptoms need more attention.
Owning animals means you’re constantly learning. Some days it’s cute babies and fresh eggs… other days you’re researching chicken diseases at all hours. 😂🤦♀️ But that’s farm life, and we wouldn’t trade our crazy little crew! ❤️🐔🦆🪿
