For your amusement:
Odin and the Scary Spood

I did a painting class where we painted one of our pets and I chose Carrots, my jumping spider as my muse. Odin has been receiving wound care the last several days and I put him in the guest room while I cleaned out his crate. Carrots’s portrait was in there. As I was cleaning, I heard a scuffle, a big thud, and Odin crowing. I went into the room and found Odin on top of a box looking very proud of himself and Carrots’s portrait knocked down. Odin defeated the biggest spood he ever laid eyes on! Good boy Odin! 🤣🥰

The new flock has now been leg banded, tested for disease, and vaccinated thanks to help from my friend Christy! Most of the flock was healthy on arrival but there is one girl being treated for vent gleet and another that had ascites. I drained 135ml of fluid off her belly! Two girls had blocked noses and now are breathing easier. The boys got their spurs trimmed and everyone got treated for the bird mites they had. Everyone is feeling better and is settling in!

Wow! I just returned home from a whirlwind adventure! “What kind of adventure?”, you ask….a chicken adventure of course!! Saturday morning I got up at 2:15am to do farm chores, picked my friend up at 4am, and flew to New Jersey at 7:45am. We landed at 1:30pm, and picked up our new flock of Nankins at around 5pm. We drove a couple hours, got a hotel room fit the night and smuggled the birds inside. We grabbed some food and headed to bed. We woke up at 5am and loaded the birds up before the boys started crowing and we got back on the road. There were a few silly side quests but we mostly stuck to the script and drove straight through from that point on. Roughly 56hours after our journey began, we got home and got everyone settled. Thanks DeLynne Marie for being my amazing copilot/coconspirator!!Thanks also to Christy Tomcik for helping get everyone leg banded, swabbed, and vaccinated today!!

Early on the morning of July 1st, Foxy was ushered over the rainbow bridge with my husband and I at her side. She was able to enjoy a wonderful weekend of eating normally, her crop emptying well, sunshine, and time with the flock. We thought maybe she had turned the corner and was finally feeling better, but it was not to be. She was a precious soul and was so full of love for her sister Autumn and her rooster Dazzle. She is already so missed by all of us but we are comforted by the fact she is no longer saddled by cancer. Fly high beautiful girl!

She’s certainly not out ofthe woods yet, but Foxy is feeling quite a bit better than she was in this picture I took at the vet clinic on Friday. With some intensive care in the form of subcutaneous fluids, pain meds, a liquid digestible diet, and some medications to get her GI system moving again she is much better!

Meter a dull moment here at the ranch! We rescued this guy from getting pecked to death by a flock of grackles. He’s going to have his degloving injury treated and will be returned to our property when he’s all better. Thanks to NOCO Wildlife for taking this guy in to get him healthy!

Farm life isn’t always peaceful and idyllic, even when your animals are all pets….maybe, especially when your animals are all pets. This is Foxy, one of our 3 year old bantam Rhode Island Red hens. About a week and a half ago, I noticed she wasn’t getting down off the roost in the morning with all the other birds. Turns out she had fluid in her belly. I took her to the vet, did some testing, and then took her to another vet who could do ultrasound. We found out yesterday this sweet girl has a belly full of cancer. Fortunately we are doing everything she needs to make her more comfortable and shrink the cancer down. It’s a cancer that is often seen in hens and is hormone dependent. Once you quiet down the hormones the cancerous growth usually shrinks and goes dormant. Birds can live a year or more past diagnosis with treatment. We are lucky to have such wonderful veterinarians to help us! We are very glad she will get to spend some more time with us until it’s time to help her over the rainbow bridge.
