We said goodbye to Magnolia Shania Moon aka Shania on Saturday, November 22. A legend in her own right, she taught me priceless lessons. We always butted heads, but we shared that competitive streak. She was a daughter of Runnerelse and a Top Moon mare. People still talk about her even though she's been retired since 2013. People still remember me “and the bay mare.”

She won two 4-H State Championships (2008, 2012), AK-SAR-BAN (2009), four trips to the high school rodeo state finals, and buckles and checks and anything else you can win can chasing. She had a reputation of being a fire breathing dragon, but damn was she gritty. You couldn’t tie her to a trailer, but you could tie her to a fence or a tree all day long.

Automatic. Consistent. Broke. Trained by my mom. I ran her in an old o-ring snaffle half of our career and nothing else. She hardly ever hit a barrel. I could go run barrels on her and then take her into the Working Cow Horse class the next day at state. The only thing more fun than running barrels on her was sorting cattle.

She gave us five awesome babies, three still at home. Boom, Reeva, and Indee.

This one hurts more than all the rest.

Words do not do justice to how irreplaceable and unforgettable Shania was.

Almost afraid to post this because of jinxing us, but…
Raining Magnolias aka Reeva had a heartbeat check today and we are good! After a few failed breedings this year and last year, we were feeling pretty defeated and didn't want to get our hopes up, but hope still lives on! Dr. Brad Evert Johnson is one of the best vets out there and has been an irreplaceable part of our breeding program.

Reeva is by CS Flashlight and out of Magnolia Shania Moon (Runnerelse/Top Moon) and is bred to Broken Z Ranch Quarter Horses DB Senor Blakburn!

We are so excited for the next generation of this bloodline!

The Official Welcome to the Ranch post for our new barn cat Rogo. Its amazing what a little TLC does for a tenacious stray! I saw Rogo before Christmas, but couldn't get close to him. All I could tell was he had a nasty bite wound on his neck and was starving to death. For a few weeks, including a couple where I never saw him and thought he was dead, I fed him and hung out with him until he let me pick him up. Got him to a vet and hit him hard with antibiotics and dewormer, up to date on vaccinations, and put a drainage tube in his neck for a few days. Oh, and he lost his 🍒. Now, with a consistent diet, he looks like a totally different cat and he is starving for attention rather than food!

Named after Russian surgeon Leonid Rogozov, he survived the negative temps as nothing but skin and bones, plus a nasty infection. This cat has grit for sure and he'll make a nice addition to the barn management team!

This trend is old now, but I appreciate the fact that being a cattlewoman means I’m accepted as a little more feral than demure and no one really cares.

Hats off to the cattlewomen who are also raising cattlewomen and cattlemen. You’re extra feral.

Yesterday, we said goodbye to a matriarch on this ranch. Cinder Runnin aka Cinder was laid to rest at 29 years old. She was a daughter of Runnerelse and her dam was a granddaughter of Cutter Bill. Cinder gave us many babies over the years, including Kylee’s high school pole bending horse, Runsomemore(T.J.), and our current broodmare, Twilight Run (Kono, pictured). Cinder was a fantastic broodmare, who produced eye-catchers with that old-school cow sense. She was a great mother. She will be missed.

If you have any of Cinder's offspring (kids OR grandkids ❤️), please feel free to share with us!

Dear Small Breeder…. I see you!

I see you pouring your heart and soul into those mares praying for a good heartbeat check.

I see you, missing family gatherings because a mare needs bred. Or one is about to foal.

I see you, sleepless nights hoping nothing goes wrong at foaling time.

I see you, crying because you lost a foal, mare or both.

I see you standing over that prize yearling, that just broke its leg.

I see you, struggling wondering which incentives to pay into. Because everyone wants them all paid into every incentive possible.

I see you, as you are saying goodbye to the old mare that started it all… wondering if you should keep going.

I see you, struggling on which mare to breed to which stallion to hopefully make someone’s super star!

I see you, smiling because it all went right this time!

I see you, smiling because someone called to tell you how much they love that foal you raised. And it is their heart horse!

Keeping going small breeder! Because without you, there are a lot of people missing out on that once in a life time horse.

Our only first calf heifer had her bull calf early Tuesday morning (2:30AM 😴), but she had him all on her own and is a fantastic mama! ❤️❤️
