I love hanging out with my donkeys, but they genuinely seem a little bored. Not sure what to do about that. I spend time with them, but given the fact that they’re so emotionally intelligent I wonder if it’s just not enough. But animals cost a lot of money and require time and I’m not at a point that I can take more in.

This particular guy came from a kill pen.
There are so many burros and donkeys that are in corrals across the United States waiting for homes. 😢

Please don’t buy an animal from a breeder when there are so many that need homes.

It’s true… donkeys don’t like to play basketball. 🏀 👎🫏

Because we caused such a stir amongst the anti-rescue crowd, keyboard warriors, internet trolls and uninformed folks who are determined not to do better once they know better:

None of these "professions" promote correct nor kind donkey husbandry for many reasons. Not just what we have written on this single infographic. End stop.

Once we learn more about donkeys, it is our duty as stewards of these amazing longears to care for them better. This means correct husbandry in terms of feed, companions, workload, hoof care and veterinary care, and presentation to the public.

Rant warning: I was denied the ability to let a single car park overnight on my own driveway — a driveway that literally exits and enters from the highway, complete with a mile marker and guard rail on my property. I was hoping to earn a small amount to support the care of my alpacas, donkeys, and chickens — no buildings, no traffic, no impact.

I followed the process and was told no. Yet large-scale developers are allowed to build luxury homes on former ranch land with no agricultural use. Private property rights seem to be protected only when large sums of money are involved.

Ironically, I could legally tear down my historic 1940 barn tomorrow — and no one would stop me. But allowing a visitor to park quietly overnight is somehow a violation.

If we truly want to preserve Routt County’s rural character and values, then small landowners trying to live sustainably should be supported — not blocked.
