Village Farmstead

Village Farmstead We fight alongside other workers to end exploitation in all its forms.

We produce affordable, human and ecologically nourishing food for our SEWI community using a CSA model which simultaneously provides ourselves a healthy lifestyle and living wage. Village Farmstead grows and sells produce and preserves to the Milwaukee area through farmers markets and our onsite farmstand in Oak Creek, WI.

This crew has been working hard over here to get beds prepped and planted (and attempting to avoid frost damage on the tomatoes and peppers šŸ™ƒ). We’ve also opened up 25 more CSA shares for the season, so if you haven’t locked in your veggie source from June - October, now’s the time! We have options for Every Week Shares and Every-Other-Week Shares.

Local markets and agro-ecological production in particular has a resilience like none other to withstand global economic and political shocks. That why we are opening up 25 more CSA slots at our 2025 PRICE!

Field walk: finally got around to taking some field photos. All of the major plantings are well on their way, harvest is 3 weeks in, and summer fruits are just around the corner.

You’ll probably notice that we’re employing more w**d fabric than ever. We have a terrible sow thistle population, which grows in networks under the soil and can take over plants in weeks. We’ve spent seven years digging it out on our hands and knees and we’re over it. Hoping to slow down its growth and spend less time w**ding to allow more time for planting and establishing healthy cover crops in between plantings to decrease its vigor!

I had a dream last night that first, our house caught fire from a cracked string light, followed by extinction sized hail. The house fire probably had to do with just finishing Steinbeck’s ā€œTortilla Flatā€ and the hail was probably due to the fact that we just had a pretty damaging hail storm. But it all came together on the most obvious night: the night before the first CSA delivery.

Besides a few small wholesale accounts, CSA is how our farm makes money. We love it because we’re planners, and it’s great to be able to plan what to grow and know exactly where and when it’s getting delivered. It also makes a great excuse to have tons of friendly faces stop by the farm and get excited about vegetables.

We’ve been working hard this spring to make this CSA season happen, and the first day is always exciting but a little stressful; hoping we got all our members signed up correctly and communicated with thoroughly (not to mention hoping for cooperative growing conditions). But the crops are looking gorgeous and we’re feeling ready to officially start harvest season.

Here’s the first share! Thanks to all who are joining us this season!

It’s time. Tunnels get prepped and planted first while the sun and the wind dry out the field. Ambition is high this time of year, and it better be, cuz we have quite the project list.

Stay tuned for the plan for the ā€œbackfieldā€, which has been a few years in the making.

And if you haven’t signed up for CSA yet, we still have some spots open!

If you haven’t heard, we’re looking to grow our community! Lots of opportunities for land-based projects, 20 minutes south of downtown Milwaukee.

Living in community and sharing resources can seem daunting, but can be extremely rewarding for those who want to explore a housing structure that diverges from cultural norms.

Learning to better communicate and coexist with our neighbors (inside the house and next door), giving ourselves permission to depend on others and also be depended on, and having others around to share in the joy and despair that life brings, have all resulted from living in community with like-minded, albeit very different individuals.

If you’re someone who likes to get your hands dirty, has a collaborative attitude, and is looking to switch it up and try something new, let us know!
