Drying off my sheep is bitter sweet, and I know I'll miss the fresh cheese, but I've got a cave full of aged cheese that'll be ready to eat this winter.

I've been so busy and rarely get a chance to post. I should be getting farm chores done, but I'm busy reveling at the beauty of our miniature chicken flock, they're so beautiful. Ok... Off to let everyone out for the morning

Just processing some milk on milk processing Monday... I'm drying off the sheep slowly and an down to about half the milk daily... Soon I'll only have one sheep and one goat to milk daily... It's sad but also feels good to be less overwhelmed.
Today I made mozerella, feta, clabber cream cheese, ricotta, buttermilk and butter... Only 4 gallons of milk today and it definitely felt like the right amount.

A little urgent care visit for my old lady, swollen jaw yesterday on one side, it moved down to appear like bottle jaw.....

A little urgent care visit for my old lady, swollen jaw yesterday on one side, it moved down to appear like bottle jaw... All things I checked indicated it wasn't bottle jaw... Vet agreed, probably just a wasp bite, poor girl, the wasps here are brutal! She got steroids, antibiotics (just in case) and antiinflammatories for ongoing comfort. She was as Happy as can be for a special "mom and me" date to the vet until her antibiotic shot 😂
With livestock comes the very real thoughts about death, she's getting old, I'm probably going to have to get her butchered in the spring as long as I can keep her comfortable through winter. Is she my favorite? Yes, is she the most important animal to me? Yes, why would we eat her? Because taking her purpose away, just to bury her isn't the reality you sign up for as a farmer. Morbid morning thoughts 😭
