This week, Sabina C. V. Alexander led a session on Root Cause Analysis at the Wisconsin Laboratory Association (WLA) Spring Workshop. Through hands-on exercises like building fishbone diagrams, attendees worked through real-world scenarios to identify potential contamination sources and move beyond symptoms to true root causes. These kinds of practical sessions are where things click. When teams understand how to systematically investigate issues, they can shift from reacting to problems to preventing them.

This week, Anne, Andy, Sabina, Chris, and Mara had the opportunity to visit the University of Wisconsin-River Falls Dairy Plant, and it was an incredible experience. The facility is impressive, and the staff were welcoming, knowledgeable, and generous with their time. It is always inspiring to see how universities like UWโ€“River Falls are training the next generation of dairy professionals while operating a fully functional dairy processing facility.

A unique part of their program is that 100% of the milk processed in the plant comes directly from their university dairy farm, creating a true farm-to-processing learning environment for students.

We wrapped up the visit with a stop at their Dairy Bar to sample the ice cream and cheese made right there in the plant. Spoiler alert: we highly recommend it.
