As soon as we pulled up to this yard today we noticed this hive starting to swarm. So we waited, watched, and followed where they went which luckily wasn’t far, but it was very high up.
We don’t ever go and do swarm captures/removals when we get calls for them because we have a pretty packed schedule with our bees already, but since it was one of our hives and we saw where it went we figured we’d catch em.
We had no extra equipment on the truck other than boxes (which was convenient because there was no other way we would’ve ever been able to reach that high into that tree to get them) so we borrowed a lid from one of our other hives to use as a bottom board, shook the swarm in, swapped the bottom board out for two log rounds we found, and made a makeshift lid out of extra burlap we had in the tool boxes.
Ideal? No. But it got the bees situated enough and we’ll come back with the proper equipment and swap everything out.
