When we are in a drought, no one has the amount of water that they really need, so we all need to make sacrifices and conserve where we can.

When a data center says they have a water right, that does not mean that there is actual water flowing to them or the land they purchase.

There are times where it is worth using a little more water than zero to make sure land stays healthy, if at all possible.

It was a good omen when the cows were excited about the day. Then went on to see a herd of deer, two groups of Canada Geese, a pair of Sandhill cranes, a 10 inch trout in the creek, great blue heron, and two red tailed hawks! That was just the morning. To us, that is what a ranch should look like and what community dynamics should include. Conserving open space shouldl also ensure it is thriving into the future!

Just a calf checking on calves.

We try to check once a day for new calves so we can easily track and tag who is with who. It's amazing if you sit in the field especially with a new critter (my kiddo) those cows start to get real curious.

This 16x24 foot area is an example of what our land would look like without any winter precipitation (snow or rain). A great demonstration of how dependent our landscape is on water and also what plants are more drought tolerant, drought meaning a lack of water not just that it is hot because it hasn't been hot yet.

Alfalfa gets a bad name sometimes because of how much water it CAN use, but not how much it actually needs to survive. Alfalfa has a great taproot and can survive better than many of our pasture species.

Long day but a rewarding one! We were able to get our whole herd down to the Peoa pastures and bring our bulls in a separate trailer to our 3 acre pasture. Notice the double aluminum wire that is very hot and ensures they aren't getting out. We've tested that in the past...not worth it. Got a float valve on the trough to keep refilling and a bloat block for them to lick to make sure their gut balances out since this field has some yummy clover and alfalfa as well as young tender orchard grass.

One of those days…….Calf really had a hard time crossing the creek.
