Introducing our Lilian John at Tench Estate

For those of you that have visited us at the estate you know of this wine and what it means to me.

Lilian John is our proprietary red wine.

It's the only wine that we name, and we named it after my grandparents, Lilian and John, and we love that we get to feature them on our Spring label, because truly, they're the *spring* of our story.

They're the ones who purchased this property in 1965, and we wouldn't be here without them, and it's so important to honor them in a meaningful way.

I have a favorite photo of them walking in the vineyard from my youth (the actual image shared within this video) that I asked the artist to include on the label--So we're always reminded of them, and we can always hold them in our hearts, and remember where we came from.

Warmly,
Margaret Tench

Everything in Place – a true “Mise en Tench”

Every year, we travel to Europe with our children to visit Rem’s family, always making time to gather in Bordeaux.  It feels like a true Mise en Tench — a moment where our family is fully present and "in place."

A loving nod to the French culinary term ‘mise en place’ - the art of having every essential ingredient organized and ready in place before the cooking begins – that is the philosophy that guides us through the seasons at Tench Estate, ensuring our home is always ready to share.

Our Essential Ingredients that our community has come to love are a celebration of the seasons and the emotional connection we share with this special place.

Everything is in place.  We invite you to join our journey throughout the seasons.

Cheers.

-Margaret

So much to be grateful for as we start this Thanksgiving week...long walks with the puppy enjoying the fall colors, muddy boots from some much needed rain, time with the kids and a homemade “poke” bowl with our estate Merlot; Bromfield. We are so grateful.

The 2023 Tench Estate Cabernet Franc

We have four wines at Tench Estate and each wine label represents a season with personal meaning to us.

We chose to feature our Cabernet Franc on our winter label.  My family had never grown Cabernet Franc on our Oakville, Napa Valley estate until my husband and I took over.  The 2023 Cabernet Franc is our new release for this year.  Our first vintage of our estate Cabernet Franc was in 2021.

We also feature our production facility on the Cabernet Franc label— and also where we make our Tench Estate wines.  In 2016 we made a decision to build the winery and cave – a home for our estate wines and a custom crush for our prestigious clients.  The winery and caves were completed days before the 2017 harvest – just in time for our inaugural bottling of Tench Estate wines.

The label shows the view as if we are standing in the vineyard looking up into the production facility, which is where we filmed this winter installment.

This really highlights what's new with our third generation, which also includes our children—the fourth generation of Tench. This is why I like to think it's not the end of the story: Spring is on its way, there's more to come, and the story continues with the wine, the new year, and our next generation of the Tench family.

The waxing moon on the label also illustrates the story of this wine and season, and we look forward to sharing it with you in person.

Cheers,

-Margaret

The 2023 Tench Estate Autumn Wines Release.

As we prepare to release the 2023 Tench Estate wines, I find myself thinking back on the season, not just of the vines or the wines, but of the people who brought it to life.

We feature our flagship cab in our Autumn label. Cabernet for this is grown in our most 'red rocky' part of our vineyard. The most 'iconic' that we have here at Tench. This label is dedicated to my parents' generation. Especially my dad. It was important for me to include my dad on his tractor, on this label.

When we first built our winery here on my family’s land in east Oakville, there were many things that I was anticipating and expecting to come - primarily and most importantly the joy and privilege of cultivating and creating our own estate wine. That essential joy, I'm grateful to say, remains today.

A mix of enthusiasm, humility, and grace is precisely what the 2023 vintage feels like for me. It’s the convergence of the right people, the ideal elements, our family history, a 'singular terroir', and the perfect weather—all aligned to grant us a wine I am deeply proud of.

The 2023 Tench Estate Release: I invite you to share in my enthusiasm by taking part in our Fall Release. On Wednesday, October 15, 2025 at 9 A.M. PST please go to https://www.tenchvineyards.com/profile/login/ to secure the available wines.
We will be offering:

• 2024 Tench Estate Sauvignon Blanc
• 2023 Tench Estate Lilian John
• 2023 Tench Estate Cabernet Franc
• 2023 Tench Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

Warmly and with great gratitude,
- Margaret Tench

The Heart of Our Cellar

The sun might not be up yet, but the heart of our cellar, our Wine Family is already hard at work, including our attention-stealing winery dog, Abra!

Rain or shine, they're actively working in the winery, custom crush facility or wine cave assisting and supporting the winemaker in the production of wine. It's a demanding job with a lot of barrel-work each day, but it's a labor of love where every member of the team, including Abra and me, works together like a family.

Each year we welcome interns from across the globe to our Wine Family at Tench Estate. They dive headfirst into the world of winemaking, working in the winemaking facility. It's hands-on education at its finest, a chance to learn the craft from the ground up and become an integral part of our team. They bring fresh perspectives and boundless enthusiasm, enriching our winery with their diverse backgrounds and shared passion for wine, and united by a common goal: to craft exceptional wine. This passion translates into the meticulous attention to detail required for the many technical aspects of winemaking.

For those enophiles with a technical interest in winemaking, the team in the winery, cave and custom crush house assist the winemaker with crushing, pressing, fermentation monitoring, pump-overs/punch-downs, additions, cleaning, sanitation, filtration, bottling, topping, blending, inventory, sampling, lab tests, equipment maintenance, record keeping, vineyard work (sometimes), tasting, evaluation, safety adherence.

And ultimately, it's their dedication, often delivered with a smiling face and a great attitude – the very heart of our cellar – that truly makes for a happy and thriving Wine Family and exceptional wine.

Cheers to family, and exceptional wine in 2025!

-Margaret

Exploring The Art of Wine Tasting at Tench Estate

I love it when guests feel a visceral connection to our family story as told through the aesthetic of each of our wine's label art. It is easy to overlook the art in the day to day but I am often reminded by guests of how lesser noticed items during a visit are equally as artful.

People connect in different ways beyond the label art - It might be a particular well framed vineyard view as seen through the opening of our wine cave, the nostalgic aromas of the winemaking area, the birds chirping, or the dramatic soil color and rock compositions when walking through our vineyard in the Oakville benchlands —something just clicks.

It's about that time of year at Tench when the rains wane and the sun shines at angles that make everything appear artful and photo worthy. Enjoy!

Wishing you many artful moments 😊,

-Margaret Tench

Winter Green at Tench Estate

The winding, cobbled road walk down to our Oakville pond meanders through our Cabernet Sauvignon blocks and is bound on the other side by our Cabernet Franc block, our Merlot block and a small wedge of our Petit Verdot block.

The unique microclimate around the pond safeguards the dormant vines through the winter, as well as improves the terroir conditions for the grapes.
