Where Every Note Begins: Farming at Cardinale

Part IV: Suckering

Some of the most important decisions in the vineyard happen one shoot at a time.

In the early growing season, unwanted shoots are removed by hand, guiding the vine’s energy toward what matters most. This careful work improves air flow, reduces disease pressure, and allows the vine to focus on balanced, intentional growth.

It is a precise and physically demanding practice, one that cannot be rushed or replaced. Each pass through the vineyard is done by hand, with a long-term view of vine health and fruit quality.

Part III: Pruning

The work of a vintage often begins months before the first budbreak.

During pruning, each vine is carefully cut back to guide the coming season’s growth. Afterward, an organic wound protectant is applied to safeguard the vine from Eutypa, a disease that can enter through fresh cuts.

A small but essential step in protecting the long-term health of the vineyard.

Part II: Bio Char

The work begins where it cannot be seen.

Organic vineyard material is transformed into biochar and blended with compost, enriching the soil and increasing organic matter beneath the vines.

A closed-loop approach to farming, where nothing is wasted and everything returns with purpose.

This is regenerative farming, practiced not for a season, but for generations.
