Harvest has come to a close, with the final fruit arriving at the w**ery on the 23rd of September.

Now, as fermentations complete, our w**emaking team tastes each lot daily, carefully evaluating their progression. Once ready, each lot is pressed, and decisions are made regarding the aging of individual press fractions alongside or apart from the free-run w**e. These nuanced choices help define the character of the vintage.

At Opus One, architectural details were designed to serve the w**emaking. The Mezzanine is a defining element of our gravity-flow w**ery, allowing harvested fruit to move gently through the cellar while helping preserve the quality, freshness, and character of each vintage. Once the fruit is carefully sorted, gravity carries the grapes into the fermentation tanks within the Cuvier below, much as it did in the hillside w**eries of the 19th century.

The Jean-Michel Frank oak table in the gallery reflects the French designer’s signature approach: restrained form paired with exceptional materials and craftsmanship. Custom made in 1991 from sandblasted, limed oak, the table has long been accompanied by another Opus One tradition: orchids.

The 2023 growing season unfolded with quiet consistency. Early rains replenished the soils, a cool summer fostered gradual maturation, and an unhurried harvest from September 14th to October 16th allowed each block to be brought in at its ideal moment. The result is a vintage marked by freshness, balance, and refined expression.

With more than 60% of the Estate now harvested, the transition from hot weather to cooler temperatures has created ideal conditions for the remaining fruit. Flavors continue to evolve toward vibrant red fruit expression while preserving freshness and structure. The skins are softening, exhibiting the prized “melting” character that, together with bright acidity and fresh red fruit expression, forms the trifecta of harvest readiness.

While the fruit continues to impress, the defining story of this harvest remains the people behind it. Across the Estate, an extraordinary spirit of collaboration has moved the season forward, prompting w**emaker Michael Silacci to describe the teamwork simply as “amazing.”
