Kami decided to capture the baby bump bliss with the girls. They are due around October 14th.
Malin was being diva-ish, so we gave her a free pass.

Transformation is on the horizon! Malin and Luna are not only thriving but also expecting. With confirmed pregnancies and October due dates; we can't wait to witness the incredible change that's about to unfold!

For anyone following their story. Malin turned 2 in April and Luna will be 2 this month. Their latest weights were 1170 lbs and 1020 lbs respectively. They have really come a long way in 1 1/2 years.

The harsh reality of chicken farming. Even our Chicken Palace was not 100% predator proof. 😄
We left the house today at 2:40 pm and when we returned around 5:30, 95% of Kami's chickens were killed. Our neighbor said he ran 3 husky looking dogs off around 4 pm when he got home.

To say Kami is heart broken is an understatement. Her Pet chicken Stripes was one of the casualties as well as the majority of her show chickens.

Her 3 remaining hens and 1 rooster are understandably in shock and moved to the smaller coop and locked up for the night. Praying they make it through the night.

With this said we won't have eggs for sale for the foreseeable future. We will let you all know if/when we have extras available.

Some of you knew we were dealing with a medical emergency with Storm for the last week and half and we appreciate all the support you have shown Kami and us. Today Storm has crossed over the Rainbow Bridge and will be deeply missed. 🌈
Please, if you see Kami, feel free to give her a Hug, but don't ask her too many questions. She is taking this really hard. ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹

So I got the best Christmas present this year! Everyone meet Matilda, our mini donkey! She was just weaned and made it home this week.

She has decided that the calves are her friends and follows them everywhere. For those of you that have seen the pictures of our rescue calves in the past. I have some updated photos here. They have put on so much weight and are finally looking healthy.

We have to change the rhetoric!

I like math, let’s do some:

PER HEN
$5.00 - pullet chick
$23.50 - chick starter (for 5 months)
$2.50 - nutrients supplement

Total $31 for a chick to 5 months old hen

5 months on for 2 years (prime laying) per hen
2lbs feed per week X 52 weeks a year for 2 years = 208 lbs fed.
208 lbs / by 40lb (per bag) = 5.20 bags fed
5.20 bags X $19.99 = $103.95 worth of feed

$103.95 + $31 = $134.95 total

Let’s pretend the chicken for two years produce 350 eggs… average depends on breed.

$134.95/350 = $.3855
$.3855 X 12 = $4.63 PER DOZEN

Now add in: equipment, heat, bedding, fencing, water, time, electricity, predation … etc!!

That’s $4.63 a dozen without the add ins… TO BREAK EVEN.

Let’s change this rhetoric going around let’s try:

ā€œI can’t believe I paid $5 for these corporate garbage quality eggs from a supermarketā€

Or better yet:

ā€œI can’t believe I ONLY paid $5 for these locally produced, high quality eggsā€

It’s just not sustainable.
