Since we get calls about people wanting a donkey to be a livestock guardian every week!
Mini donkeys are cute and can be great pets, but they are not good livestock guardians.
Most miniature donkeys are too small to protect animals from coyotes, stray dogs, or other predators. Some don’t pay attention to predators at all, and others can even be rough with the animals they are supposed to guard.
A real livestock guardian dog is bred specifically to protect livestock. Breeds like the Great Pyrenees, Anatolian Shepherd, and Maremma Sheepdog naturally bond with their herd, stay alert, and help keep predators away before attacks happen.
If you want real protection for your goats, sheep, chickens, or other livestock, a good livestock guardian dog is one of the best investments you can make.
Mini donkeys are companions — livestock guardian dogs are protectors.
