"Every spring seems to arrive in a rush. The days fill with moving hens, planting gardens, fixing fences, managing sheep, answering emails, and trying to stay ahead of a growing list of jobs. By June, it can feel as though we've spent weeks hurrying from one task to the next without ever quite catching up.
Then one day we look up. The oak trees we planted with our kids four years ago along the fence lines are fully leafed out. Prairie flowers are blooming and stretching skyward. The lambs that seemed so small just a few weeks ago are suddenly strong and tall. While we've been busy racing from one project to another, the natural world has been moving at its own steady pace. The trees didn't rush. The prairie didn't worry about deadlines. They simply kept growing, one day at a time.
It's a good reminder that some of the most important things happening on a farm—and in life—are the ones unfolding quietly in the background, whether we're paying attention or not. They rarely feel urgent in the moment, but often become the things that matter most.
Lately, we've realized that the same is true of the vision we've been building here on the farm. Much of it has been taking shape quietly, one day at a time. When we planted those oak trees, I told myself I might never sit beneath their shade. I always thought of oaks as slow growers, and I imagined they were a gift meant mostly for our children and future generations. But today they're already casting small shadows across the grass. Standing beside them, I can see that the future we were hoping for isn't as far away as it once seemed."
