On the night of October 9, 1837, one of the deadliest maritime disasters in American history unfolded in the surf off Ocracoke. 🌊 The luxury steamship Home, racing from New York to Charleston, was caught by the monster hurricane known as Racer's Storm and driven helplessly toward the North Carolina shore.

The Home was fast but fragile, and as the storm tore her apart the passengers discovered there were only two or three life preservers aboard for nearly one hundred and thirty people. She struck the shoals near Ocracoke and broke up in the pounding waves, and roughly ninety souls were lost within sight of land as families were swept into the dark water.

The tragedy shocked the nation and led directly to the Steamboat Act of 1838, which for the first time required a life preserver for every passenger. ⚓ A terrible night on the Outer Banks helped write one of the earliest safety laws in American history.

So many lives lost for want of a few cork vests. It is sobering how often safety rules are written in the aftermath of loss.

I don't know who looked at a hot dog and said, "You know what this needs? Fig preserves." But I'm glad nobody talked them out of it. Then they threw pineapple relish, bacon, fried onions and barbecue sauce on there just to make sure your taste buds never get a chance to get comfortable. It's a wild combination, but every bite somehow makes the next one make a little more sense.
