Shout out to the farm minions for knocking out a project yesterday that we've been talking about forever: a concrete entrance and exit lane into the parlor! Drainage is one of the biggest obstacles we struggle with (I think any farm really). All the water being used to clean has to go somewhere and wherever cows congregate mud is sure to form. And concrete is expensive… it cost over $8K to put the in original slab for the barn when we moved the farm.
Nick came up with an idea months ago and in the last couple weeks we were finally able to get the concrete poured. We plan on extending the concrete as we can, but it's already so much better. Cleaner cows coming in the barn means less chance for mastitis issues, less time the milkers are having to spend cleaning, less water usage, a cleaner barn, and safer milk.
Everyday our crew is thinking of ways to improve the quality of the product going out and how to make our processes more efficient while thinking about what is best for the cows. Next project up, installing our pipeline!
