Ogden Bay Produce

Ogden Bay Produce 5th generation produce farmers, growing 170 acres of quality food. U-Pick garden from Aug-Oct. Hyrum also had over 100 beehives on his farm.

It all started out in 1909 when Hyrum Peterson purchased 200 acres in Taylor, Utah. He saw an advertisement in a magazine that farmers were starting vegetable transplants in a shoe box and thought to give this new concept a try. The sandy loam soil of Taylor made a beautiful seed bed and he found himself very successful. Hyrum grew many fruits and vegetables with a main focus on the watermelon and

cantaloupe market. Hyrum sold watermelons door to door during the Great Depression for a nickel to keep his farm running. He passed the operation on to his son Melvin M. Peterson, an Agriculture Economist. Melvin took a small leave of absence from the farm while he took an assignment from the Federal Government to live in Persia and teach the natives farming and conservation techniques. Melvin passed the passion to farm on to his son Melvin Lee Peterson, who expanded the operation tremendously and started out-of-state shipments. Melvin also legalized the farm under the name Ogden Bay Produce, after his great love for the area. He, along with his brother-in-laws, and two sons, Nathan and Matthew, run the operation now. Currently, we grow over 150 acres of produce, and are set up to grow/pack/ship over 5 million pounds of produce across Northern Utah and surrounding states in 2022. Now, over 100 years later, we are still farming the land that Hyrum Peterson purchased in 1909.

We are out touring all the fields as a family today. Matt is a fifth generation farmer and that knowledge doesn’t come overnight. It comes little by little and he’s already trying to instill some of that knowledge to the next generation of Peterson farmers 🌱

Some of today’s lessons involved checking the moisture levels, seeing how last night‘s wind affected our plants and checking pumpkin seed germination.

Cold snap update on the tomato field: we did have a little bit of frost damage on the plants covered with clear plastic cups, but we think they’ll come out of it. Everything covered with a foam cup was totally protected with no frost damage 🙌🏻

We had so many of you reach out with thoughts, prayers and encouraging comments and y’all totally helped lift our stressed-out spirits 😅 thank you! We love this community!!

We know a lot of Utah farmers (many of our personal friends) have already had so much crop loss this year and our hearts truly go out to them! There is a lot of risk involved with farming and dealing with bad weather is part of the game. But we are doing all we can to protect these crops and bring our community fresh fruits and veggies this summer.

Our early tomatoes made it through last night’s freeze! 🙏🏻

Each spring, we plant about 4,000 tomato plants in our high tunnels. This allows us to harvest about a month earlier than our field tomatoes. Most years, they do well without added heat, but on especially cold nights like last night, we turn on supplemental heat and even cover them with styrofoam cups for extra protection.

Sometimes that still isn’t enough, but we’re feeling especially grateful that they pulled through!

Another U-Pick season is coming to a close, and we’re feeling extra thankful. Each year brings its own lessons and rewards, and this one reminded us again that farming is truly a team effort.

We’re incredibly grateful for our hard-working crew…the men, women and teenagers who show up and give their all to help us grow and harvest the crops that fill our tables. We could not do what we do without them!

And to our loyal customers…THANK YOU! We appreciate every smile, every message cheering us on, every family who makes our farm part of their traditions. We’ve loved seeing the moments you create here…young men cutting flowers to take to their mom, grandparents bringing their grandkids to find the perfect pumpkins, mamas teaching their littles ones how to pick fresh veggies and so many more ❤️ Those moments remind us that this garden is about so much more than crops; it’s about connection, tradition, and community.

and a group of volunteers will be picking for the local food bank on Tuesday, October 14th from 4–7 PM. Anyone is welcome to join and volunteer; we would love your help! You can pick some to donate and some to take home. Gleaning will last until Wednesday, October 15th at sundown. After that the garden will be closed so we can start prepping the land for winter.

Please bring your own buckets and containers and pick only during daylight. Park in the designated parking loop east of the U-Pick garden.

⛔️NO parking on the dirt lane leading in/out of the garden or along the road in front of the garden ⛔️

Pumpkins are not included in free picking and will still need to be purchased 🎃
