Ducks have very sensitive feet. We noticed Delilah was limping and in pain Friday morning so she has been staying in our bathroom this weekend. She had some cuts and rough spots on her feet. We have been nursing her with daily baths, boosted water, and poultry antibiotic ointment. Bryan bought a welcome mat for their ramp as we think that may have been the cause.

Our friend Destiny LeFevre at the Humble Homestead found 14 baby ducklings the day before Jenessa's birthday so of course we had to bring 3 home! Let's hope for all girls this round so we can have a good start breeding next spring.

Yesterday, we shared the sad news of Daphne the duck passing, but there was happy news on the farm this week too. Meet our new rooster, Schroeder, a gift from our neighbors and dear friends, The Hoopers. He is a juvenile white Silkie and such a sweet boy. We waited to share the news until we knew he was staying and settling in with our flock. He does crow but later in the morning so we're already awake. Hopefully he will make us some cute baby chicks by next spring!

Farming is a constantly changing journey that makes you aware of how little is under your control. Sad news - Jenessa found Daphne the duck dead in the duck house earlier this week the day after we moved them to their final location. We don't know what happened. That leaves us with Dorothy and possibly one other female duck. You should keep a ratio of 3 females to 1 male in a flock so this has us concerned if we will be able to keep a male and run a healthy breeding program. For now taking it one day at a time and keeping them safe in their solar powered electric fenced in area and duck house.

The turkeys are now 10 weeks old and growing bigger every day. This fella likes to puff up when I take his picture.

Yesterday was a big day here at Raygan Fields. After work we bought a sprinkler for the ducklings to play in, thoroughly cleaned the chicken coop, introduced the teenage chickens to the rest of the flock, moved the turkeys to where the teenage chickens were, and tucked everyone in for bed. Did we mention it was 90 yesterday? Farming is often stinky and hard work but it's the little moments that make it all worth it. Before bed we were back outside to enjoy the full moon and watch the fireflies in the backyard.

The ducklings are now part white and part yellow as they're growing their adult feathers in. Eventually they will look like the Aflac duck. They now spend most of the day outside in their new playpen - within eyesight & hearing range of Jenessa's office window.

One of our new favorite activities is watching the wildlife that come to our ponds. We have a mated pair of Canadian geese that come daily like clockwork, some turkeys, ducks, and deer too. The long term plan is to develop the ponds so they're deeper, create a place for overflow, and to select plants that help promote a healthy ecosystem. We're toying with the idea of setting up a trail cam so we can watch and share the wildlife activities.
