π Winter Squash Season at Cruikshank Farmstand! π
If youβve ever looked at all the different winter squash on the stand and thought, βWhat do I even do with that?β β this post is for you!
Winter squash can sometimes be a little intimidating if youβve never cooked with it, but there are so many delicious ways to enjoy it. Iβve included some of my favorite recipe cards in the photos to give you a few ideas for using each variety! π
Hereβs a quick guide to the varieties we have:
π Carnival/Celebration Squash β A beautiful, colorful squash with a sweet, nutty flavor and tender flesh. Itβs excellent roasted and works especially well with maple syrup, brown sugar, butter, walnuts, and warm fall seasonings.
π Heart of Gold Squash β A sweet, mild winter squash with a creamy texture. Its shape makes it perfect for cutting in half, roasting, and stuffing with meat, vegetables, rice, grains, or cheese.
π Honeynut Squash β Think of this as a smaller, sweeter relative of butternut squash. Honeynut has rich orange flesh and becomes wonderfully sweet and caramelized when roasted. Itβs great with maple, pecans, herbs, or simply a little butter and seasoning.
π Acorn Squash β One of the classic winter squashes! Acorn squash has a mild, slightly sweet and nutty flavor. Roast it in halves or slices, stuff it, or season it with Parmesan and herbs for a savory side dish.
π Butternut Squash β Smooth, sweet, slightly nutty, and extremely versatile. Butternut is wonderful roasted, mashed, purΓ©ed, or turned into soup. If youβre new to winter squash, this is a great one to start with!
π Delicata Squash β A smaller squash with a sweet, creamy flavor and thin edible skin, so thereβs no need to peel it! Itβs delicious roasted in slices, mashed, or served as an easy fall side dish.
π² BONUS β Harvest Squash Soup!
Canβt decide which squash to use? Mix several varieties together! Iβve also included a Harvest Squash Soup recipe that combines different winter squashes into one creamy, flavorful fall soup.
