Babies galore!

Let's catchup on all the fun we have been having! First, Cooper hatched out his first batch of Red Sexlink chickens that he bred right here on the farm. A Rhode Island Red roosters with a Delaware hen. The females are red and the males are white, hence being named Sexlinks.

Two calves born this morning, from 2 cows that are mother and daughter. The mother's were both born on the farm. We have a bull and a heifer calf.

And our first farrowing on the farm. This sow is a fierce protector of her piglets. We have a lot to learn yet on the farrowing end. But so far, this momma has taken care of her piglets and they are growing fast and already rooting on pasture.

Some chickens.

We revamped our chicken brooder this year. Moved it into a different building all together. This one has insulated walls and concrete floors. We can control the temperature inside that is needed for young chicks so much better now.

So far, our first batch of broiler chicks are growing great and healthy. Once we have them butchered in 4 more weeks will really tell us how much better our brooder is by carcass size and quality. And how well they do once we put them on pasture. This first batch always has the hardest time due to cold springs here in MN. Next four nights are forecasted below freezing.

The gilts are out on pasture now, after a long MN winter. We are hoping to use them to open up our woods and control the brush growth. First stop, this overgrown swath next to our swamp.
