Some chickens.

We revamped our chicken brooder this year. Moved it into a different building all together. This one has insulated walls and concrete floors. We can control the temperature inside that is needed for young chicks so much better now.

So far, our first batch of broiler chicks are growing great and healthy. Once we have them butchered in 4 more weeks will really tell us how much better our brooder is by carcass size and quality. And how well they do once we put them on pasture. This first batch always has the hardest time due to cold springs here in MN. Next four nights are forecasted below freezing.

The gilts are out on pasture now, after a long MN winter. We are hoping to use them to open up our woods and control the brush growth. First stop, this overgrown swath next to our swamp.

This year we received the LOFF (Lakewinds Organic Field Fund) grant from Lakewinds Co-op. The goal of LOFF is to provide funding to farmers working on the development and sustainability of organics, and is funded by the Community Giving Round Up program.

Our grant was to purchase these freezer trays that our pork processor uses. This enabled us to transport our pork, 10-12 pigs at a time, from the processor back to the farm more efficiently. Instead of repackaging all that pork into cardboard boxes before loading for transport.

These trays helped reduce our labor on meat pickup day, from roughly 4 hours of labor to only 1 hour! Besides helping us immensely on labor, we are reducing the amount of cardboard used. Each time we picked up our pork, that is roughly 90 cardboard boxes.

These trays are an investment that will continue to be of value to our farm for years to come. We are also excited to reduce our impact on the environment by reducing cardboard use. Our way of farming, is exactly that - to reduce our impact on the environment and make it better.

Thank you to and members for your support of small farms like ours!
