Ever wonder why produce slows down in August? It’s not that farmers are falling behind, It's plant biology. When temperatures climb into the 100s, plants shift into survival mode, putting their energy into staying alive instead of producing fruit. Flowers drop, pollination slows and growth stalls, even for healthy, well cared for plants. That’s the lull we see most Oklahoma summers and this one has been particularly hot!

Once it cools off (or night temperatures are below 80 degrees), everything changes. Summer crops start producing again right as the cool season crops come in, making fall one of the most productive stretches of the year. This season of abundance continues until the first freeze, some years as late as November!

Please be patient with us as we wait for this heat wave to break, and continue to shop locally for the items the farmers are able to provide. More local food is on the way!

Think of it like a food chain versus a food web. A food chain is a single line: one link breaks, and the whole thing goes down. A food web is interconnected. If one strand is disrupted, the rest of the system holds steady. Our food supply works the same way. The more connected and diverse it is, the more resilient it becomes.

A food system supported by many small and mid-size farms works like that web. If one farm has a problem, others can continue supplying food, reducing the impact of any single issue. That’s the idea behind strong local food networks, and it’s the approach we support at OKC Food Hub by connecting growers across Oklahoma.

Want to be part of a stronger, more diversified food web? Join our FarmShare program to diversify what’s on your plate while supporting the local producers who help build that resilience.

We’re OKC Food Hub, Oklahoma’s local food distributor.

We’re a nonprofit on a mission to bridge the gap between Oklahoma farmers and the communities they feed, by increasing access and opportunity across our local food system. That means giving small and mid-size farmers a consistent, year-round place to sell what they grow, while connecting restaurants, schools, grocers, food banks, and families to fresh, local food.

We believe farmers come first, relationships matter more than profit and diversity makes our whole system stronger. We know every farmer we work with personally, and we visit their farms, so our community always knows where their food comes from.

Founded in 2022 by Jenna Moore & Thanh Tran, we’re building toward one vision: an accessible, equitable, resilient local food system that takes care of people and the planet.
