First lettuce…now eggs! But guess what? Not at OUR house!

Thanks to the garden produce, we didn’t have to be concerned about the lettuce debacle, and although egg laying has slowed down a bit due to the heat, but we still have eggs enough for our house and usually an extra dozen or so a week. And production should ramp up once the weather starts to cool a bit.

If you would like to be on the list for some farm fresh eggs, here’s a Google form so you can let me know. It will be first come, first served as long as we have enough to fulfill.

Hot, hot, HOT 🥵! This Oklahoma heat has kept me mostly inside for July…only managing to do basic gardening upkeep, egg collecting, and finding ways to cool down the flock. I’ve been so very lucky that I haven’t lost any chickens to the heat - a lot of my chicken tender friends have 😔. Ready for some cooler weather and time to get my fall planting started! I’ve got winter squashes, pumpkins, Brussels sprouts, leeks, and romanesco cauliflower to plant…what else should I put in? Here are some pics of July in the garden, in the meantime!

Sometimes, life in the garden teaches you patience…waiting for tomatoes to fruit and ripen, constantly checking the sugar baby watermelons to see if they’re ready to take up (much to Bowie’s dismay she is also learning to be patient and that watermelon takes time)…and waiting on new babies to add to your flock.

I have been wanting 2 silver-laced Polish hens to add add to my flock - and then my flock will be complete with the breeds I want and my basket will be filled with the egg colors I want.
I’ve been incubating these Silver-Laced Polish eggs for 26 days. 21 days is the typical incubation time. Not a pipping in sight. My guess is the shipping carrier was a bit rough with them and they never got a chance to develop - when I candled them I only saw slight veining on a couple but finished the run, just in case. The breeder is being generous enough to send me another batch…so I guess I will once again be patient.

Here’s hoping I’m able to round out my flock with these gorgeous birds in about a month’s time!

This guy (field pumpkin) was planted too early due to a seed mixup and then the entire plant was lost to the dreaded squash vine borer before it could even fully develop 😔…the girls and Fella will enjoy this as a nice summer snack, with the added bonus of a natural dewormer!

A week into June…and I realized that not only did I not 👑 a for June yet…I skipped May entirely! I’m blaming it on end of the school year teacher busy-ness. 🤷‍♀️

In any case, I guess that just means that this month we get a !

And since they never do anything without the other, it seems only fitting that my beautiful silkie girls and are bestowed the honor. They are such sweet fluff nuggets that love to spend their days in the shade of the pergola and enjoy (or maybe tolerate is a better word) periodic cuddles from me. 💜💕💜

Malificent learned that it’s all fun and games to break curfew until you end up on the roof, with no idea how you got up there, and no way to get down. Cue mom climbing a ladder in the dark to get you down and put you in your rightful spot on the roost!
