I was giddy to get my hands on some brand new fancy-pants campanula varieties. I planted them under my dollar store garbage cans, sprinkled slug bait on the outside perimeter and I’ve been covering them with frost cloth at night just in case. I’m like a helicopter mom protecting my babies.

Fall planting and cleanup are in full swing on the farm!

My three fantastic summer helpers joined me yesterday to get the stock and snapdragons in the ground. We also pulled out spent plants and started cutting back the dahlias. The girls were a little sad to see the dahlias go but the goats were thrilled to get a pile of delicious snacks.

There’s always plenty to do this time of year, and it sure feels good to check a few things off the list!

Yesterday gave us the most gorgeous fall sunshine… perfect weather to start planting for next spring’s blooms. I soaked my butterfly ranunculus corms and tucked 200 of them into the high tunnel. It was a good day for some dirt therapy and an audiobook.

Chunk… protector of the farm. He’s quirky. He’s crazy smart. He hates the vacuum, deeply distrusts the Amazon guy, and is almost always by my side.
He can defend his flock from coyotes without a second thought, but on a quiet fall afternoon, there’s nowhere he’d rather be than sitting next to me on the deck.

And if I happen to stop petting him before he’s decided we’re done? That giant paw gets thrown right over my arm as a not-so-subtle reminder. 😂
Big, brave, slightly ridiculous, incredibly loyal… he’s my big fluffy best friend❤️
