🌿✨ Pruning and Propagating in the Winter Sun☀️💜

This past week, we embraced the chilly yet beautiful sunny days to give our lavender some much-needed TLC! 🌱 Here’s a peek into our lavender adventure and some tips for you to try at home.

🪻Why Prune Lavender?
Pruning not only keeps your lavender healthy but encourages lush growth and vibrant blooms come spring.

💁🏼‍♀️Tips for Pruning Your Lavender:

🪻Timing is Key - The best time to prune is late winter to early spring, just before new growth starts. A sunny day helps you see what you’re doing!

🪻Use Sharp Tools: A clean pair of garden shears will make the job easier and reduce the risk of damaging the plant.

🪻Cut Back Wisely: Trim about one-third of the plant’s height, focusing on the woody stems. Avoid cutting into the old wood, as it may not sprout new growth.

🪻Shape It Up: Aim for a rounded shape to help rainwater drain off and prevent rot. This also promotes a fuller appearance.

🪻Propagation Time: If you want more lavender, take cuttings from the pruned stems! Remove the lower leaves and place them in a pot with well-draining soil. Keep them moist and in indirect sunlight until they root.

🪻Care After Pruning: Water sparingly until new growth appears, and give your lavender a boost with a light fertilizer once it starts to wake up.

✨ Pro Tip: Always wear gloves to protect your hands from any prickly bits!

We’re excited to see how our lavender flourishes this spring! 🌸 Have you pruned your lavender yet? Share your experiences below! 👇💬

🌿💜 Exciting days ahead on our lavender farm! My daughter and I are busy testing the soil today as we prepare to transplant hundreds of new lavender plants this spring! 🪻We can’t wait to share the beauty and joy of lavender with our community at the upcoming Olalla Lavender Festival this summer! 🎉

Did you know that playing with soil is not just fun but also incredibly beneficial for kids? As a Pediatrician (and farmer)I truly cannot emphasize enough how much engaging with dirt can strengthen their immune systems, boost happiness, and enhance focus. 🌍💚 By getting hands-on with nature, children learn, explore, and connect with the world around them!

Here’s a fun and simple activity you can do at home to explore pH levels with your littles:

1. Gather Your Materials: You’ll need soil, water, a clear container, and pH test strips or red cabbage juice (just boil some red cabbage in water, strain it, and let it cool).

2. Mix It Up: Combine a handful of soil with water in the container and stir well.

3. Test the pH: Dip the pH strips into the mixture or add a few drops of cabbage juice to see the color change! 🌈

4. Discuss: Talk about what the colors mean and how different plants thrive in various pH conditions!

Join us on this thrilling journey as we gear up for a summer full of lavender, fun, and community connection! Let’s get ready to dig in together!

I’m not sure who works harder!

Humans 🤘🏼 or the 🐝Bees???
(I’m thinking the Bees!)

Whoever works the hardest has to pay the bills? What do you all think????

FUN FACT! 😲🐝💪🏻 Bumblebees are remarkably strong for their size, capable of carrying loads up to twice their body weight while flying. This strength, due to their unique muscle structure and rapid wing beats, helps them transport pollen and nectar effectively, making them excellent pollinators.
