Help your flock beat the heat!! Frozen treats can help chickens stay comfortable during hot weather while providing enrichment. Here are some easy ideas:

πŸ” Frozen Watermelon Chunks

* Freeze seedless watermelon cubes or halves.
* Chickens love pecking at the icy fruit.

🫐 Frozen Berry Blocks

* Freeze blueberries, strawberries, or blackberries in muffin tins with water.
* Hang or place the ice blocks in the run.

🌽 Frozen Veggie Treats

* Mix corn, peas, diced carrots, and chopped greens in water and freeze.
* Great for pecking and cooling off.

🍎 Frozen Fruit Ring

* Fill a bundt pan with water, apple slices, grapes (cut in half), berries, and melon.
* Freeze and place in a shady spot.

πŸ₯’ Frozen Cucumber Slices

* Cucumbers are high in water and make a refreshing snack when frozen.

πŸ₯¬ Frozen Greens Pops

* Freeze kale, lettuce, spinach, or cabbage leaves in ice blocks.
* Hang them for added enrichment.

🍌 Frozen Banana Mash

* Mash ripe bananas and freeze in small portions.
* Offer as an occasional treat due to the sugar content.

πŸ‰ Watermelon Ice Bowl

* Hollow out a watermelon half, fill with water and fruit pieces, and freeze.

πŸ’‘ Remember

* Always provide plenty of fresh, cool drinking water.
* Offer frozen treats in the shade.
* Treats should make up no more than about 10% of the diet to maintain balanced nutrition.

A favorite among many backyard flocks is a frozen watermelon or a large fruit-and-veggie ice ringβ€”they’re simple, inexpensive, and keep chickens entertained for quite a while. πŸ“
