This week my oven is working overtime. ๐ŸŒป

I'll be at Compass Prairie Art Farm in Eudora for the Kaw Valley Farm Tour. I met the team at my last Moonlight Market and fell for their flowers, and when they invited me, I couldn't say no.

Come for the flowers, stay for the potica. Warm burek, kremลกnita, and little peach cookies are coming too. Bring a friend, bring your family, or come solo.

In Slovenia, there's a whole tradition of cookies that look like something else entirely.

Peaches with no fruit inside. Coffee beans made of dough. Potatoes with zero potato. Walnuts hiding chocolate.

I grew up with these on every holiday table and every celebration spread. Now I'm bringing them to Kansas City โ€” one convincing little cookie at a time.

๐Ÿ‘ Sweet Peaches

These are breskvice โ€” traditional Slovenian peach cookies. Cookie balls, carved open and filled with cocoa, ground walnuts, peach jam and a splash of rum. Then dusted and blushed to look just like the real thing.

โ˜• Coffee Bean Cookies

Cocoa dough with real coffee mixed in, shaped and scored by hand to pass as beans. The flavor is just as strong as the disguise.

๐Ÿฅ” Little Potatoes (Krompirฤki)

Just 3 ingredients, rolled in cinnamon to mimic the skin. The simplest cookie in the collection โ€” and somehow one of the most satisfying to eat.

๐Ÿชจ Walnuts (Orehki)

Two crumbly halves pressed together around a soft chocolate filling. Shaped and textured to pass for the real thing โ€” until you take a bite.

I thought people would say: Slovenia? Never heard of it.

Instead, at almost every market, someone stops and tells me about their grandmother. Their husband's family. A kitchen somewhere far away that smelled like this.

I didn't expect that. Not even a little.

Because food does something nothing else can. It reaches back through decades and gives you a moment you thought was gone.

These are Sweet Peaches โ€” breskvice โ€” one of Slovenia's most beloved traditional cookies. Made by hand, from memory, the way they've always been made.

One of the things I love most about visiting Slovenia is sitting down for coffee and knowing there will be cake next to it. Not as an afterthought โ€” as the whole point.

That's the spirit I'm bringing to Dolce Caffรจ 1st birthday on August 15th โ€” four cakes, made the way we actually eat them back home. Slow down, take a seat, let the two happen together.

Coffee and cake are not two separate things where I grew up โ€” you order both, always. So for Dolce's 1st birthday, I'm bringing four cakes that tell that story: one truly Slovenian, two that Slovenia adopted as its own, and one that's just close to my heart.

Big news โ€” I got interviewed by Voyage KC! ๐ŸŽ‰

We talked about my whole journey: starting a cake business in China, moving to Kansas and missing real bread, and deciding to bring Slovenian treats โ€” potica, strudel, breskvice โ€” to Johnson County instead.

Also some of the harder parts: the paperwork, the IRS mix-up, doing my first farmers' market with a 4-month-old at home.

Buฤno olje. Pumpkin seed oil. We call it green gold back home, and once you've had it, chocolate sauce might feel like a downgrade.

It's pressed from roasted pumpkin seeds until it's almost black-green and tastes nothing like you'd expect โ€” nutty, deep, a little smoky. Growing up it went on salads, potatoes, fresh bread... and yes, ice cream.

So while my family reaches for chocolate, I'll be over here with my green gold, not sorry about it. ๐ŸŽƒ๐Ÿฆ
