The feral kitty from Friday's vet visit is eating well. (She thinks she's hiding... and always has her eye on me - you can see it in the corner of the box.)

I check on my buddy, Abe, throughout the night. He likes to lie down in his giant bed and I have to make sure he can get back up when he's ready.

Duncan is also checking in. He appears at the gate but for a different reason. This is the time Rob is often there grooming Abe and Duncan is now accustomed to a treat from Rob when he notices him.

Duncan watched a few minutes, saw Rob was not there and went off into the night. (He has a giant run-in shed and 5 other horses he can visit with.)

More wagons of beautiful hay were delivered this morning. Our horses go through a staggering amount!

Valentino walks out like a gentleman!
He's now 16 months old and was gelded 3 weeks ago. Directions were;
stall rest, antibiotics, banamine for one week, hand walking for one week and a small turn out for one week.
Today, his life could return to normal. Lindsay brought him out to a brand new paddock to have a look around. Considering he's had to be quiet for 3 weeks and this was something brand new, he couldn't have done better!

Here comes the new hay! 790 bales delivered this morning, 2 wagons 10 days ago and 3 more will be coming in tomorrow!

We go through a staggering amount of hay and purchasing it directly off the wagon saves a significant amount. The less it's handled, the less the cost.

I can't post her other ear on Facebook because it's terribly infected and looks gruesome.
She's a feral stray that I'd been asked to help. I went over last night and she was able to be trapped.
I fed her last night but held off this morning in case the vets wanted to do surgery.
Her appointment is at 11am and she needs a name for her records.
She'll have to be sedated because she can't be handled.
Today's $5 Friday is for this surprise kitty's vet bill, whatever that may be.
New hay is coming in, and, as you can imagine, is more expensive this year because of the price of gas. In addition, the horses' vet bills are crazy high so adding hundreds for this cat is difficult.

I'll update her vet visit in the comments.

Thank you! ❤️

26 students from Columbia High School had signed up to help out Friday afternoon!

They tackled a paddock that a machine couldn't get into and reclaimed the biggest garden (above one of the horses we'd lost).

They were such a pleasure to work with - such a truly wonderful group!

Thank you to the 4 teachers who stepped right in as well!

THANK YOU, ALL! ❤️

* 3 students even drove back out to finish another paddock they'd been picking up!

My buddy, Abe, has had a tough 4 months beginning with EPM. 30 days of Marquis ($2,900) seems to have resolved that.

HIs neck was x-rayed and steroids injected to ease the discomfort of arthritis. That has also been done for his back and front feet.

He has Adequan injections (for arthritis)..

There was significant muscle wasting from the EPM. His balance was off so that was carefully managed and no longer an issue. He's fed 4x a day, a total of 18 pounds of senior feed, in addition to soaked hay cubes, because he can no longer chew hay.

The poor guy misjudged where he laid down one night and got cast. That was a scary event, required a vet visit and once again, he bounced back.

The other night, he choked on his grain.

This $5 Friday is for Abe. We have more hay coming in tomorrow. I had a wonderful donation recently that has covered Valentino's vet bill, $7,000 towards the completion of electricity to our hill, a run-in shed for one of the pastures and fence repairs (happening right now) as well as the weekly hay/grain delivery.

Emergency vet bills come when you least expect them and I've committed to a wagon of hay in the morning.

Our vet says "old horses don't get old without someone who loves them". Abe is adored and as long as he can remain comfortable, we'll do whatever he needs. He's happy and kicking the door or turning on the lights to remind me he's hungry. He loves going out in the pasture, Rob's 2 hour grooming sessions and interacting with students. He's the best therapy horse ever.

Thank you so very much! ❤️

Our first law enforcement workshop took place in 2014.
Held annually, this year it's July 9th ~

It all came about because of a frustrating neglect case the previous fall. Navigating the process was a challenge. The State Troopers overseeing it were wonderful though - they went above and beyond to help these horses.

That was September of 2013. In the end, all 4 horses came to us and the owner was charged.

I asked the Sergeant I was working with if he thought putting a workshop together would be beneficial. He then spoke with the Police Academy. They were specific about requirements and ultimately did approve it.

By law, police officers must respond to complaints involving horses. If they're not familiar with them, it makes it difficult to assess the situation. (They'll often see hay and a water source on the property and conclude there's nothing more they can do for the skinny horse. The owner stated he's just old.) Finding somewhere safe for horses to go is time consuming and paying for all of it is another hurdle to overcome.

Our workshop goes over laws, procedures, appropriate care and provides a handbook to refer to. There are demonstrations and opportunities for hands on.

Feedback has been very positive. The information and networking has proven invaluable over the years.

(We even offer breakfast and lunch!)
